Learn how to use pitch trim in Flight Simulator 2004: default keys, correct technique, take-off setup and fixes for common control problems.
To use pitch trim in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9), first hold the desired pitch attitude with the elevator, then tap Num 1 for nose-up trim or Num 7 for nose-down trim until control pressure disappears. Use short taps, recheck the attitude and speed, and retrim whenever power, speed or flap configuration changes.
What are the FS2004 pitch trim controls?
FS2004's default pitch-trim commands are Num 1 for nose-up elevator trim and Num 7 for nose-down elevator trim. These are numeric-keypad keys, not the number keys along the top of the keyboard.

How should I trim an aircraft in FS2004?
The correct sequence is attitude, power, speed, then trim; trim removes sustained elevator input rather than replacing it.
- Set the aircraft configuration. Select the intended power, flaps and landing gear position.
- Use the elevator. Hold the pitch attitude needed for the climb, descent or level flight you want.
- Let the speed settle. Avoid trimming while the aircraft is still accelerating rapidly unless you intend to keep adjusting it.
- Apply trim in short taps. Trim in the direction that relieves the elevator input you are holding.
- Ease the control towards neutral. Keep the attitude steady as you relax the elevator, then make one or two final trim taps if needed.
With a normal spring-centred joystick or yoke, physical resistance does not become lighter as it would with force-feedback hardware. Instead, each trim input lets you move the control closer to its centre while maintaining the same attitude. Do not release it abruptly to test the result.
A mistake we see constantly is using trim to chase every small pitch movement. Correct the attitude with the elevator first, then trim away the resulting steady input. This technique is also part of flying FS2004 with more realistic handling habits.
Does pitch trim hold altitude or airspeed?
Pitch trim does not directly hold altitude; it balances the aircraft around a particular speed and configuration. If power or configuration changes, the aircraft can climb or descend even though the trim has not moved.
For level cruise, set cruise power, use the elevator to establish the required attitude and allow the speed to stabilise before trimming. Small corrections may still be necessary because turbulence, fuel burn and imperfect flight models prevent trim from acting like an autopilot.
When should pitch trim be adjusted again?
Retrim whenever a lasting change creates continuous forward or backward control input.
- After increasing or reducing power
- When changing climb, cruise, approach or descent speed
- After extending or retracting flaps or landing gear
- After disconnecting the autopilot
- When changing from level flight to a sustained climb or descent
How much trim should I use for take-off and landing?
For take-off, use the aircraft's take-off trim mark or its supplied checklist when one is available. Do not add excessive nose-up trim to make the aircraft rotate by itself; that can produce an abrupt pitch-up and poor control after lift-off.
On approach, configure the aircraft, establish the target speed with elevator and power, then trim to remove most of the steady pressure. After applying go-around power, control the immediate pitch change with the elevator before retrimming for the climb.
Why is pitch trim not responding correctly in FS2004?
Most FS2004 trim problems come from the keyboard, conflicting assignments or an analogue trim axis overriding the commands.
- No response: Confirm that FS2004 is receiving the numeric-keypad key rather than the top-row number. Laptop keyboards may require an
Fnlayer, and changing the Num Lock state may be necessary. - Trim moves the wrong way: Use the control-pressure test above. If you are holding back pressure, apply nose-up trim; if you are holding forward pressure, apply nose-down trim.
- Trim runs to its limit: Look for a held key, repeating joystick button or duplicate assignment. Trim should normally be applied in taps rather than by holding the command.
- Trim jumps back: An assigned hardware trim wheel or noisy analogue axis may overwrite keyboard adjustments as soon as that axis sends another value.
- Only one add-on aircraft is affected: Test a default FS2004 aircraft. If trim works there, the add-on's flight dynamics, panel logic or custom controls are the likely cause.
After disconnecting the autopilot, hold the existing attitude and trim away any remaining pressure gradually. Do not suddenly centre the trim in flight, because the aircraft may be correctly trimmed for the autopilot's last speed and configuration.
