How do I use Virtual Desktop with X-Plane 12 VR?

To use Virtual Desktop with X-Plane 12 VR, install Virtual Desktop on the headset and its Streamer app on the PC, connect the headset, select one VR runtime, then start X-Plane and enable VR hardware. Use VDXR/OpenXR when your X-Plane build supports it; use SteamVR as the compatibility fallback.

Should I use VDXR or SteamVR with X-Plane 12?

VDXR/OpenXR is the preferred first route for an updated X-Plane 12 installation, while SteamVR remains useful for older builds and compatibility problems.

VDXR connects X-Plane to Virtual Desktop without the additional SteamVR layer, although that does not guarantee higher frame rates on every PC. Owning the Steam edition of X-Plane does not force you to use SteamVR, and a direct X-Plane installation can still use SteamVR.

Some X-Plane 12 builds make OpenXR opt-in with the launch argument --open_xr. For those builds, add it after the executable path in a dedicated shortcut or launch option. Builds that select OpenXR automatically do not need it, and the argument should not be used when deliberately taking the older SteamVR/OpenVR route.

Set up Virtual Desktop for X-Plane 12 VR

The reliable startup order is Streamer, headset connection, VR runtime, X-Plane, then Enable VR Hardware.

  1. Install both Virtual Desktop components. Install the headset app and the Virtual Desktop Streamer on the X-Plane PC. Sign in as required by the application and leave the Streamer running.
  2. Prepare the wireless network. Connect the PC to the router or access point by Ethernet. Put the headset on a clear 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection near that access point, without a guest network, wireless extender or mesh hop separating it from the PC.
  3. Select one runtime. Choose VDXR as the OpenXR runtime in Virtual Desktop Streamer when using the direct OpenXR route. For the compatibility route, leave VDXR out of the chain and use SteamVR instead. Do not run a headset vendor's PC-link session at the same time.
  4. Connect from inside the headset. Open Virtual Desktop and connect to the PC before starting X-Plane. If using SteamVR, launch it only after Virtual Desktop has established the headset connection.
  5. Launch X-Plane 12. Start it from the streamed Windows desktop; it does not have to appear in Virtual Desktop's Games list. Use the OpenXR launch option only if the installed X-Plane build requires it.
  6. Enable the headset in X-Plane. Open Settings, select VR Hardware and enable VR. If the tab or control is unavailable, close X-Plane and correct the runtime or startup order rather than repeatedly toggling the setting.
  7. Centre the cockpit view. Sit in the normal flying position, reset the headset's forward direction if necessary, then use X-Plane's VR view reset command. Map that command to an accessible yoke, joystick or keyboard button.

What Virtual Desktop settings work best for X-Plane 12?

Begin with one moderate resolution scale, a refresh rate the PC can sustain and an automatic codec setting; increase image quality only after frame delivery is stable.

  • Avoid stacked supersampling. Do not combine Virtual Desktop's highest quality preset, raised SteamVR resolution and aggressive anti-aliasing immediately. Keep SteamVR near its neutral resolution when testing that route, then adjust one layer at a time.
  • Match refresh rate to performance. A lower headset refresh rate is preferable to missing the frame target continuously. X-Plane is often limited by its main simulation thread even when the graphics card is not fully occupied.
  • Tune the simulator before bitrate. World detail and traffic can increase CPU load; resolution, anti-aliasing, shadows and cloud settings add GPU load. Our X-Plane performance tuning guide explains how to identify which side is limiting the session.
  • Raise streaming bitrate cautiously. Bitrate improves compression quality, not X-Plane's rendered resolution. Excessive bitrate can produce network spikes, delayed head movement and audio interruptions even when the PC frame rate looks acceptable.
  • Test Synchronous Spacewarp both ways. It can make a marginal frame rate feel smoother, but may bend propellers, wings and cockpit edges. Use its automatic mode initially, then compare it disabled on a repeatable flight.

Why is Enable VR Hardware greyed out?

A greyed-out VR control means X-Plane did not detect a usable headset and runtime when it started.

  • Connect before launching: close X-Plane, connect the headset to Virtual Desktop, start the chosen runtime and relaunch the simulator.
  • Check for a runtime conflict: VDXR, SteamVR and the headset manufacturer's PC software should not all compete to be the active OpenXR runtime.
  • Check the OpenXR launch method: if that X-Plane build requires --open_xr, VDXR will not be used without it.
  • Restart after changing runtimes: switching the OpenXR runtime while X-Plane is open normally requires the simulator to be closed and launched again.
  • Test without overlays and plug-ins: if VR initialises and then crashes or displays black, temporarily remove third-party VR overlays and test a default aircraft before blaming Virtual Desktop.

Why does X-Plane stutter through Virtual Desktop?

If headset movement stutters while the monitor view looks smooth, wireless, encoding or decoding latency is usually responsible rather than X-Plane alone.

Virtual Desktop's performance overlay separates game rendering, encoding, network and headset decoding latency. A network spike calls for a cleaner wireless channel, a wired PC connection or lower bitrate; high game latency calls for lower X-Plane settings. Can I use VR controllers or hand tracking?

X-Plane can use supported motion controllers, but physical flight controls remain the more dependable choice for primary flying inputs.

The yoke, pedals and throttle stay connected directly to the PC; Virtual Desktop only carries the headset session and controller data. Hand tracking may be exposed as emulated controllers on supported headset and runtime combinations, but aircraft manipulators and plug-in cockpits vary.
