Does VATSIM reduce FPS and how can I improve performance?

VATSIM can reduce FPS, but the network connection and voice processing are rarely the main cause. The usual load comes from rendering and updating injected aircraft, especially at busy airports. Improve performance by limiting traffic range or count, using lighter model-matching aircraft, disabling duplicate simulator traffic, and tuning CPU-heavy airport settings.

Why does VATSIM lower flight simulator FPS?

VATSIM FPS loss is usually traffic-rendering load, not the network connection. In Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX, the pilot client injects nearby network aircraft into the simulator; each one can add geometry, textures, lights, animations and position updates.

  • Main-thread load: the simulator must update aircraft positions, animations, lights and sometimes traffic or collision logic.
  • GPU load: every visible model adds geometry, shadows, reflections and draw calls.
  • VRAM use: detailed model-matching packages may load many high-resolution liveries around a busy airport.
  • Asset-loading stutter: a brief pause can occur when an aircraft type or livery first appears and its files are read from storage.

A quiet sector may show almost no measurable difference, while a crowded event airport can expose a CPU or GPU bottleneck that was already close to its limit. This is the same underlying issue covered in our explanation of which MSFS traffic settings create the heaviest workload.

Voice audio and VATSIM data use comparatively little processing power. High latency or packet loss can make other aircraft jump, freeze or move unevenly, but that is not the same as low local FPS.

How can I confirm that VATSIM traffic is causing the slowdown?

A controlled comparison at the same airport will separate VATSIM traffic load from scenery, weather and aircraft performance.

  1. Choose a repeatable test: park at a gate and keep the aircraft, camera, weather, time and graphics settings unchanged.
  2. Let traffic finish loading: wait for nearby models and liveries to appear. Initial loading hitches should not be mistaken for sustained low FPS.
  3. Temporarily suppress traffic: use the pilot client's traffic display option if available, or disconnect while testing at the gate before contacting ATC.
  4. Compare frame time as well as FPS: a frame-rate cap may hide the difference even though CPU or GPU headroom has fallen.
  5. Repeat at a quiet airport: good performance there but poor performance at a crowded hub points strongly to injected traffic, airport scenery or both.

Which VATSIM settings improve FPS the most?

Remove duplicate and distant traffic before lowering broad graphics quality. This preserves cockpit and scenery detail while cutting work that contributes least to an online flight.

  1. Disable duplicate traffic sources. In MSFS, avoid running VATSIM aircraft alongside built-in AI, live traffic or multiplayer aircraft. In X-Plane, do not blindly remove AI slots if your pilot client uses them for TCAS; disable only sources that create separate visible aircraft.
  2. Lower the maximum aircraft count. If the client exposes this control, it is usually the most effective setting at a crowded hub. Keep enough nearby traffic for safe ground and circuit operations.
  3. Reduce the injection or display range. This helps most in cruise, where distant aircraft provide little visual value. At a dense airport, a count limit is often more effective because many aircraft are already close.
  4. Use efficient model matching. Prefer dedicated traffic models or CSL aircraft over full flyable aircraft with detailed interiors and systems. Excessively detailed models and large livery textures can consume substantial GPU memory.
  5. Tune for the actual bottleneck. When main-thread limited, reduce traffic count, airport vehicles, ground traffic and object density. When GPU- or VRAM-limited, target model quality, texture resolution, aircraft shadows and reflections. Lowering screen resolution rarely fixes a main-thread limit.
  6. Check repeated model errors. Missing or incorrectly registered model libraries can produce fallbacks, repeated loading or spawn-and-remove behaviour. Repair the affected package or matching rule rather than lowering every graphics slider.

Does internet speed affect VATSIM FPS?

Internet speed normally affects traffic updates and voice quality rather than rendered frame rate. A slow or unstable connection may cause delayed movement, disconnections or broken audio, but buying a faster connection will not remove a GPU or main-thread bottleneck.

If stutters occur exactly when aircraft appear or disappear, asset loading is the more likely cause. There is no fixed “normal” VATSIM FPS loss: it can be negligible in quiet airspace and much larger at an event hub, depending on traffic density, scenery, model complexity and the simulator's available performance headroom.
