VATSIM vs IVAO: which flight sim network should I use?

For general PC flight simulation, VATSIM is usually the safer default because it tends to have more simultaneous traffic worldwide. Choose IVAO when its local division is more active in the region and hours you fly, or when you prefer its client and training system. Both are free networks with human ATC.

What is the main difference between VATSIM and IVAO?

The main difference is the community you will actually encounter: traffic density, controller coverage, local language, training and events vary by network and division. Both connect simulator pilots to volunteer controllers, carry other pilots' traffic and use procedures based on real aviation.

Do not choose from registered-member totals alone. Those figures include inactive accounts and say nothing about who is online at 1900 UTC on the weekday when you normally fly.

Which network should I choose?

Choose the network with dependable controllers and pilots in your usual region, then use global activity as the tiebreaker.

Choose VATSIM when:

  • You have no strong regional preference and want the best general chance of finding active airspace.
  • You fly across several continents or time zones rather than staying within one local division.
  • You prefer its available client for your simulator and operating system.
  • Your friends, virtual airline or training group already flies there.

Choose IVAO when:

  • Its live map repeatedly shows better ATC coverage at your preferred airports and flying times.
  • The local IVAO division offers useful training, events or support in your language.
  • People you intend to fly with already use IVAO.
  • You prefer Altitude's installation, audio controls and model-matching workflow after trying it.

For a new pilot without an established group or regional tie, we would start with VATSIM. An active IVAO division in your home region is still more valuable than a larger network whose controllers are elsewhere when you fly.

How should I compare VATSIM and IVAO before joining?

  1. Define your normal session. Write down the airports, days and UTC hours when you genuinely expect to fly.
  2. Compare live coverage several times. Inspect both networks' traffic maps during those hours across several days. One major event can distort the comparison, so look for repeat coverage.
  3. Check simulator compatibility. Confirm that the network's pilot client supports your exact simulator and operating system. Native Xbox and PlayStation editions cannot run the required VATSIM or IVAO pilot clients directly.
  4. Inspect the local division. Look at its controller activity, training language, event schedule and published procedures rather than judging the whole network by one airport.
  5. Try a quiet flight. Test push-to-talk, audio levels, model matching and traffic performance away from a major event. Client behaviour on your own PC can settle an otherwise close decision.

Can I use both VATSIM and IVAO?

Yes, you may maintain a separate account on each network and use whichever suits a particular flight. Do not connect the same simulator session to both at once; this creates duplicate traffic and can breach network rules.

Ratings, exams and training progress do not automatically transfer between them. Read each network's rules separately rather than assuming a procedure accepted on one will be handled identically on the other.

Do I need IFR experience before joining?

No; both networks accept VFR flights, but you must be able to control your aircraft and follow basic instructions. Before entering busy controlled airspace, practise taxiing, headings, altitude changes, transponder use, radio readbacks and changing frequencies without losing control.

If a controller issues something you cannot safely perform, say unable promptly rather than accepting it and improvising.

What causes a bad first network flight?

Most poor first sessions come from setup errors or excessive traffic, not from choosing the wrong network.

  • Connecting on a runway: load at an unoccupied stand and confirm your position before connecting.
  • Leaving built-in ATC active: disable simulator ATC audio so it does not issue instructions that conflict with the human controller.
  • Duplicating traffic: turn off the simulator's AI or public multiplayer traffic when the network client is supplying aircraft.
  • Using voice activation: assign and test a push-to-talk control so cockpit noise does not transmit continuously.
  • Skipping model matching: install and configure a compatible model set, or other aircraft may appear as generic types or fail to display correctly.
  • Mismatching the callsign: use the same callsign in the pilot client, flight plan and radio contact.
  • Starting during a major event: make the first flight from a moderately quiet airport, where there is time to correct audio or route problems.
