MSFS 2024 generally wins for out-of-the-box visual realism, while X-Plane 12 needs high-quality scenery add-ons to approach its ground-detail fidelity. The biggest difference is the world outside the cockpit, not necessarily the aircraft itself.

Which simulator runs better on the same PC?
There is no universal frame-rate winner. Both simulators can become CPU-limited or GPU-limited, but they reach those limits through different workloads.

A mistake we see constantly is comparing an empty X-Plane runway with a photogrammetry city in MSFS 2024, then treating the frame-rate difference as an engine benchmark. Aircraft systems, traffic, weather and scenery complexity must be similar before the result means anything.
- Start with stock content. Remove traffic tools, scenery enhancements, plugins and unusually demanding aircraft from the first comparison.
- Match the output resolution. Use the same monitor resolution and comparable render scale. Disable frame generation and aggressive upscaling initially, because displayed FPS can hide poor base frame times or image artefacts.
- Use comparable conditions. Test a quiet rural airport, a dense city airport, clear weather and heavy clouds. One location cannot represent overall performance.
- Run each test twice. Shader preparation, cached scenery and streamed data can make the first pass less representative.
- Identify the limiting component. Reduce a CPU-heavy setting or a GPU-heavy setting separately. Lowering every option at once ruins image quality without showing what caused the bottleneck.
For X-Plane 12, reduce world-object density, traffic and demanding plugins when the main thread is limiting performance. Lower anti-aliasing, cloud quality, shadows or resolution when the GPU is saturated; reduce texture quality mainly when VRAM is the problem.

Why can MSFS 2024 look blurry despite high settings?
Blurry MSFS 2024 scenery is not always a graphics-card problem. The cause may be low render scale, upscaling, terrain-detail settings, unavailable streamed data, a slow connection or cache trouble.
If the cockpit is sharp but the ground is soft, investigate terrain detail and scenery streaming first. If the cockpit text and exterior edges are also blurred, check render scale, anti-aliasing and upscaling. Melted-looking buildings or delayed detail usually point towards photogrammetry delivery or level-of-detail behaviour rather than texture quality alone.

Which simulator should you choose for graphics and performance?
Choose MSFS 2024 for the best stock scenery; choose X-Plane 12 for local control, broader desktop-platform support and less dependence on streamed world data.
- Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 if realistic VFR scenery, recognisable cities, satellite imagery and visual sightseeing are your priorities, and you have a capable system plus a stable internet connection.
- Choose X-Plane 12 if you use macOS or Linux, prefer locally installed scenery, want more predictable offline visuals, or are prepared to build the appearance you want with custom scenery.
- Choose by aircraft as well as engine. A well-made aircraft in either simulator can matter more than a modest difference in environmental graphics.
- Do not compare consoles with desktop benchmarks. MSFS 2024 is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 systems, while X-Plane 12 is a desktop simulator. A direct same-hardware comparison is therefore mainly relevant to Windows PCs.
