Water everywhere in X-Plane 12 usually means the simulator has no valid terrain mesh for that area. The regional Global Scenery may be missing or corrupt, or a custom mesh or orthophoto package is overriding it with a bad tile or water mask. Isolate add-ons first, then repair or reinstall the affected scenery.
What makes X-Plane 12 replace land with water?
X-Plane displays ocean when it cannot load a valid base-mesh DSF for the location. Airports, roads and other overlays can still appear, which is why runways and buildings may look as though they are floating offshore.

How do I find the scenery package causing it?
The quickest test is to disable third-party scenery and reload exactly the same location. Restart X-Plane between tests because terrain already loaded into a flight may remain in memory.
- Close X-Plane. Make a backup of
Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. - Disable third-party packages. Change their entries from
SCENERY_PACKtoSCENERY_PACK_DISABLED, or move the package folders temporarily outsideCustom Scenery. Leave X-Plane's supplied packages alone. - Reload the affected location. If the land returns, one of the disabled packages contains the conflicting mesh or tile.
- Re-enable packages in groups. Restart and test after each group, then narrow the fault down to one package.
- Inspect
Log.txt. Look near the scenery-loading entries for the affected package, DSF file or missing terrain resource. Our scenery-isolation and Log.txt checks explain the same clean-testing method in more detail.
Deleting only scenery_packs.ini is not a valid isolation test. X-Plane rebuilds the file and normally enables every package it finds, so the faulty mesh may simply load again.
How do I repair missing X-Plane 12 Global Scenery?
Use the scenery management or file-verification tool belonging to the installation you actually launch. Missing regional scenery is common after an interrupted installation, limited initial region selection or moving X-Plane between drives.
- Standalone or disc installation: run the X-Plane installer for that copy, select the option to add or remove scenery, and ensure the affected region is installed. Run its update or repair process as well if files may be damaged.
- Steam installation: confirm that the relevant regional scenery content is selected and installed, then verify the installation files.
- Multiple X-Plane copies: check the path of the executable or shortcut you use. Repairing one installation does nothing if the simulator starts from another folder.
- Folder placement: stock terrain belongs under the installation's
Global Sceneryfolder. Do not move it intoCustom Sceneryor add it manually toscenery_packs.ini.
Make sure there is enough free disk space before repairing a region. A scenery installer can appear to finish while leaving incomplete data if the destination drive fills up.
Why did changing scenery_packs.ini not remove the water?
Priority changes help only when two valid custom packages overlap; they cannot repair a defective terrain tile. A custom base-mesh DSF replaces X-Plane's stock mesh for its entire one-degree tile, even when that package sits near the bottom of scenery_packs.ini.
The usual priority is airports above overlays, with orthophotos and other base meshes near the bottom. If several custom meshes cover the same tile, the higher-priority one wins. If the winning mesh itself is broken, disable, reinstall or rebuild it. Moving it below overlays will not make stock Global Scenery show through.
Can old orthophotos cause water over land?
Yes. Orthophoto packages include base mesh, and incorrect or outdated water masks can classify land as water or produce badly flooded coastlines. Missing terrain or texture files can also leave an otherwise valid-looking package unusable.
Check the package structure and ordering against our orthophoto installation and conflict checks. For scenery you generated yourself, the reliable fix is to rebuild the tile and its water masks with an X-Plane 12-suitable Ortho4XP setup rather than editing the compiled DSF by hand.
Do I need to reinstall X-Plane 12?
A complete reinstall is rarely necessary. Repair the missing region if stock scenery is at fault, or remove and rebuild the offending custom mesh if the problem disappears during a clean scenery test.
Deleting preferences, resetting controls or changing weather will not restore absent terrain. Consider reinstalling the simulator only if file verification and regional scenery repair both fail at multiple known-installed locations with all third-party scenery disabled.
