What does a Windows 11 PC need for X-Plane 12?

- Operating system: Use a normal 64-bit Windows 11 installation. Home and Pro editions are both suitable.
- Graphics: X-Plane 12 requires supported Vulkan-capable graphics hardware and a proper NVIDIA or AMD driver. A basic display driver installed by Windows is not enough.
- Processor and memory: Meeting the minimum requirement may launch the simulator, but detailed scenery, complex aircraft and high object settings need considerably more headroom.
- Storage: Use an internal SSD where possible and leave room for scenery, updates and temporary installer files.
Do not assume that every device sold with Windows 11 is suitable. Low-power laptops, Windows-on-ARM machines and systems relying on unsupported integrated graphics may run Windows 11 perfectly well while remaining unsuitable for X-Plane 12.
How should I install X-Plane 12 on Windows 11?

- Check the hardware first. Confirm that the machine has a supported graphics card rather than relying only on its Windows 11 compatibility label.
- Install the graphics driver. Use the appropriate driver for the actual NVIDIA or AMD GPU, then restart Windows.
- Choose a sensible location. A simple folder on an internal drive is preferable to
Program Files, a cloud-synchronised folder or an external drive that may disconnect. - Run a clean first launch. Start X-Plane 12 without copied plugins, shader modifications or older aircraft. Configure graphics and controls only after it reaches the main menu successfully.
- Add extras gradually. Install one aircraft, plugin or scenery package at a time so that any new crash has an identifiable cause.
Why won't X-Plane 12 start on Windows 11?
Most Windows 11 launch failures are caused by graphics drivers, unsuitable hardware, protected installation folders or third-party plugins—not by a fundamental operating-system incompatibility.

Should I use compatibility mode or Run as administrator?
No—X-Plane 12 should ordinarily run natively on Windows 11 without Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility settings. Compatibility mode can introduce behaviour that makes diagnosis harder rather than solving the original problem.
Running as administrator is also not a good permanent fix. It may hide incorrect folder permissions and can leave files owned or written under a different security context. If administrator mode appears to solve the problem, move the simulator to a user-writable folder and correct the underlying permissions instead.
Will a Windows 10 upgrade preserve X-Plane 12?
An in-place upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 will usually leave the X-Plane 12 folder intact, but back up valuable preferences, aircraft, scenery and plugins before changing the operating system. Reinstall or update the graphics driver after the upgrade if X-Plane reports a Vulkan error or starts using the wrong GPU.
Base-simulator compatibility does not guarantee that every older add-on will work. Plugins containing Windows executable code and modifications written for X-Plane 11 may need X-Plane 12-compatible updates even when the simulator itself runs correctly on Windows 11.
