X-Plane Mobile is a separate, touch-first iOS and Android simulator, while X-Plane 12 is the full desktop product for Windows, macOS and Linux. Mobile prioritises portability and quick flights; X-Plane 12 provides richer weather and scenery, broader hardware support, VR, plugins, custom aircraft and scenery, and much deeper configuration.

Do X-Plane Mobile and X-Plane 12 use the same flight model?
Both use X-Plane's blade-element approach to flight modelling, but they should not be treated as identical simulator builds.
The individual aircraft model, systems logic, control input, weather implementation and app release all affect how an aircraft behaves. A similarly named aircraft on both platforms may therefore have different cockpit functions, avionics depth or handling details.
X-Plane Mobile is credible for portable handling practice, approaches and cockpit familiarisation. X-Plane 12 is the stronger choice for complex aircraft systems, detailed weather, failures, extensive control assignments and hardware-based procedural practice.
Can X-Plane 12 add-ons be used in X-Plane Mobile?
No. Desktop aircraft, scenery and plugins cannot normally be copied into X-Plane Mobile.
X-Plane 12 aircraft are installed under its Aircraft folder, scenery uses Custom Scenery, and many plugins use Resources/plugins. Mobile operating systems do not expose or support that desktop add-on structure. Mobile content must be supplied through a mechanism supported by the app.

A mistake we see constantly is assuming that an aircraft with the same name is the same product on both platforms. Mobile and desktop editions can have different systems, cockpits and features, and purchasing one does not normally provide the other.
Are licences and purchases shared?
No; X-Plane Mobile and X-Plane 12 should be treated as separate products with separate entitlements.
Buying X-Plane 12 does not unlock the mobile aircraft catalogue or mobile subscription features. Likewise, mobile purchases do not provide a desktop X-Plane 12 licence. Add-ons, control profiles and graphics settings are also platform-specific unless a particular feature explicitly states otherwise.
Can both versions work offline?
Both can support offline flying, but the required aircraft, scenery and authorisation must already be available on the device.
- X-Plane Mobile: downloaded or included content may be used without a continuous connection. Multiplayer, server-fed data and scenery not stored locally will remain unavailable, and entitlement checks may occasionally require internet access.
- X-Plane 12: installed local scenery and manually configured weather can be used offline after installation and authorisation. Downloads, updates, live weather and internet-based multiplayer services require a connection; a digital licence may also request periodic validation.
Before taking the mobile version somewhere without internet access, open it while connected and verify that the intended aircraft and airport area load fully. Having the app installed does not guarantee that every scenery region has been stored locally.
Which version should you choose?
Choose X-Plane Mobile for portability; choose X-Plane 12 for a full simulator setup and an expandable desktop platform.
- Choose X-Plane Mobile if you want quick flights on a phone or tablet, prefer touch or tilt controls, or need a simulator that travels without a desktop computer and flight controls.
- Choose X-Plane 12 if you want yokes and pedals, VR, multiple displays, custom scenery, plugins, complex aircraft or extensive weather and failure configuration.
- Use both if mobile flying is useful away from the computer but you still want a detailed desktop setup at home. Treat them as complementary products rather than expecting aircraft, purchases and settings to transfer.
If your main aim is to learn one particular airliner or avionics suite, confirm that the exact aircraft implementation exists on your chosen platform. The aircraft name alone does not guarantee equivalent cockpit functions or systems depth.
