Can you play X-Plane on an iPad or iPhone?

Yes—X-Plane Mobile runs on iPad and iPhone. See how it differs from desktop X-Plane, what will not transfer, and which device is better.

Yes. You can play X-Plane on an iPad or iPhone using X-Plane Mobile, the iOS edition built for touch controls and mobile hardware. It is not the full desktop X-Plane installation: aircraft, scenery, features, purchases and add-ons differ, and desktop plug-ins cannot simply be copied across.

Which version of X-Plane works on iPad and iPhone?

X-Plane Mobile is the version designed for iPhone and iPad. Desktop releases such as X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 cannot be installed directly on iOS or iPadOS, even when an iPad uses an Apple-designed processor.

The official app listing shown on your device provides the applicable operating-system and hardware requirements. Check those details before installing, particularly on an older iPad or iPhone. Our earlier coverage of the mobile edition’s aircraft, scenery and challenge features shows the type of content developed specifically for phones and tablets, although exact availability can change between app releases.

Is X-Plane Mobile the same as desktop X-Plane?

No. X-Plane Mobile uses the same broad flight-simulation concept, but it is a separate product adapted for smaller screens, touch input, limited storage and mobile processors.

How do you install X-Plane on an iPhone or iPad?

  1. Find X-Plane Mobile: Search for the official mobile app on the iPad or iPhone rather than downloading a desktop installer.
  2. Check compatibility: Confirm that the device meets the operating-system requirement displayed in its listing.
  3. Free some storage: Leave room beyond the initial installation because aircraft, scenery and other content may require additional downloads.
  4. Complete the control setup: Choose the offered touch or motion-control method and calibrate it before starting a serious flight.
  5. Test with a simple flight: Begin with a light aircraft and uncomplicated weather. If the device becomes hot or performance stutters, reduce the available visual and traffic settings.

Is an iPad better than an iPhone for X-Plane?

An iPad is usually the better cockpit because its larger display makes instruments, menus and touch controls easier to use. An iPhone is more portable, but smaller instruments and closely spaced controls can make complex aircraft harder to manage.

Performance depends on the processor, memory and thermal limits rather than screen size alone. A newer iPhone may run X-Plane Mobile better than an older iPad, so choose the device by compatibility and performance first, then display size.

Can you connect a controller or flight yoke?

A compatible mobile game controller may improve precision, but support depends on the controller, device operating system and X-Plane Mobile release. Do not assume that a desktop USB yoke, throttle or rudder-pedal set will work merely because an adapter lets it connect physically.

Can desktop X-Plane add-ons be used on iOS?

Desktop X-Plane add-ons generally cannot be used in X-Plane Mobile. Packages intended for folders such as Aircraft, Custom Scenery or Resources/plugins rely on the desktop simulator’s file structure and interfaces, which the mobile app does not provide.

A mistake we see often is copying or extracting a desktop aircraft package onto an iPad and expecting it to appear in the mobile aircraft menu. Mobile aircraft, scenery and other extras must be supplied through mechanisms supported inside the mobile edition. Desktop and mobile licences or content purchases should also be treated as separate unless an entitlement is explicitly shown in the app.

Can X-Plane Mobile be played offline?

Installation, account services and content that has not yet been stored on the device require an internet connection. Some downloaded content may remain usable offline, but online features and streamed or undownloaded data will not. Test the intended aircraft and location without a connection before relying on the simulator while travelling.

Common X-Plane Mobile problems

  • The app is unavailable or marked incompatible: The device or operating-system release does not meet the requirements offered for that app version.
  • Scenery or aircraft are missing: Check available storage and confirm that the associated content download completed.
  • Frame rate falls during longer flights: Lower visual detail, weather complexity or traffic where those controls are available. Mobile devices can reduce performance as they heat up.
  • A controller is not detected: Confirm that iOS or iPadOS recognises it first, reconnect it before launching the simulator, and then check the app’s control assignments.
  • A desktop purchase is absent: Owning desktop X-Plane does not install or unlock the desktop product on an iPhone or iPad.
