Unequal parallel runways

Monterey’s five approaches serve only two of its four runway ends. The mix—one ILS, two localiser and two RNAV (GPS) procedures—provides ground-based and satellite-based options, including a precision approach, but leaves the other two ends without published approach coverage. The parallel runways differ sharply in length: 10R/28L offers 3,672 ft more than 10L/28R, so any operation requiring more than 3,503 ft is confined to the longer runway.

Chart coverage around Monterey

Salinas Municipal has slightly broader procedure coverage, with 11 charts against Monterey’s 10, while Watsonville Municipal is comparably well covered with eight. Marina Municipal and Hollister Municipal have much thinner four-chart sets, and San Martin has three. The Los Angeles and San Francisco sectional charts add broad-area VFR context beyond the airport diagram and instrument procedures.
