Procedure coverage

Oakland’s procedure set serves six of its eight runway ends, leaving two without a published instrument approach. The mix is unusually broad: RNAV (GPS) procedures predominate, while ILS coverage includes one procedure with CAT II/III minima; localiser and VOR options add further variety. Seventeen departure charts balance the seventeen approach charts, giving the set substantial coverage for both arrival and departure planning.

Runways and surrounding chart coverage

Runway lengths vary markedly. Only 12/30 extends beyond 6,213 ft, so aircraft requiring more distance than the other three alignments provide are concentrated on that runway. San Francisco International has similarly broad chart coverage, with 52 charts against Oakland’s 46; the other listed nearby fields have much thinner sets of five to eleven. The San Francisco Sectional supplies wider regional context, while the Terminal Area Chart adds more detailed local VFR depiction around Oakland.

Does KOAK have CAT II or CAT III approaches?

Yes. 1 of the published ILS procedures carry CAT II/III minima, which allow approaches in lower visibility than a standard CAT I ILS. Those plates are listed separately in the approach table above, marked CAT II or CAT III in the chart name.

Is KOAK a towered airport?

Yes. Oakland San Francisco Bay has an operating control tower, within Oakland Center's airspace. Tower, ground and clearance frequencies are listed on this page.

How many runways does KOAK have?

4, which is why the chart set is as large as it is — each runway end that supports an instrument approach needs its own plates. The runway diagram on this page shows the layout to scale.

Are these KOAK charts current?

They are from the FAA cycle effective 6 August 2026, which is superseded on 3 September 2026. We publish each new cycle on its effective date. They are for flight simulation and reference only — not for real-world navigation.
