Approach and runway coverage

Six of San Francisco International’s eight runway ends have published approaches, leaving two without instrument coverage. The mix of RNAV (GPS), ILS and localiser procedures means the set is not dependent on a single guidance type; two ILS procedures also carry CAT II/III minima. The four runways form two parallel pairs on different alignments. If an operation requires more than 8,650 ft, only the 10/28 pair provides that distance, with both runways exceeding 11,000 ft.

Nearby and VFR coverage

Oakland has 46 published charts, making its coverage broadly comparable with San Francisco’s 52. The other listed nearby fields have much thinner sets, ranging from four to eleven charts. The San Francisco Sectional supplies wider VFR context, while the Terminal Area Chart adds more detailed coverage around the airport than the instrument procedure sheets provide.
