This freeware Orion Boeing 737-300 package is meticulously crafted for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, reflecting the airline’s vibrant 1980s paint scheme. Orion operated extensively across the United Kingdom before Britannia acquired the carrier, and this release showcases that transitional moment in civil aviation history. Created by Tony Madge (repaints) and originally developed by Erick Cantu, FFX, this add-on integrates authentic flight dynamics with an accurate visual model.

Distinctive External Details and Era-Specific Livery

The exterior model employs dynamic light reflections and a polished finish, mirroring how these jets appeared at British airports in the 1980s. Orion’s original color palette has been faithfully reproduced, giving a realistic view of the airline’s branding before its operations were transferred to Britannia. Every angle of the fuselage and tail assembly has been meticulously mapped to reflect the correct proportions and markings.

Core Modeling and Expanded 737 Classic Family

Originally initiated as a 737-500 concept, the development evolved to encompass the entire 737 Classic series, incorporating the -300, -400, and -500 variants. This particular release highlights the -300, displaying its characteristic short-to-medium range capabilities and improved aerodynamics when compared to earlier 737 iterations. Built using GMax, the airframe incorporates high-fidelity geometry and fully realized control surfaces.

Authentic Engine Sounds and Volume Control

CFM56-3 engines deliver the signature audio that many simmers anticipate when operating 737 Classics. These sounds were obtained from a range of real-world aircraft, including United 737-522, JAT 737-300, and Air France 737-500 implementations. They replicate the thunderous cockpit environment that pilots encounter without headsets. Sim flyers seeking quieter cockpit acoustics can reduce the volume settings from within the simulator interface.

Interactive Animations and Operational Features

Main Passenger Door
Use Shift+E to open the primary entrance, identical to standard FS aircraft procedures.
Integrated Airstairs
Assign a key binding for wing fold to deploy the built-in airstairs. Note that with the stairs extended, the wings are technically folded, so normal flight is not possible.
Retractable Canoe Lights
Boeing’s 737-100 through 737-500 series featured landing lights on the flap fairings. In this simulation, press the tailhook command to extend those fixtures.

Historical Context of the 737-300 Variant

When Boeing introduced the 737-300, it was engineered with advanced avionics and improved CFM56 powerplants, which reduced noise and enhanced fuel efficiency over older 737 versions. Airlines like Orion, aiming to expand their route network while maintaining cost-effectiveness, found the -300 particularly appealing. This was especially critical in the competitive UK short-haul market of the 1980s.

Creators and Freeware Distribution

Free to download from Fly Away Simulation, this package merges Tony Madge’s precise Orion textures with the original Erick Cantu, FFX framework. Every piece of the add-on is included, eliminating the need for additional base models, making it straightforward to install and enjoy. The model’s animations, reflective textures, and classic avionics showcase the uniqueness of this timeless aircraft within Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.
