Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

The Grumman G-164 AgCat B/600 featured here is a freeware agricultural biplane modification that integrates powerful 600 HP Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN1 engines, advanced visual elements, and new cockpit panels. Created by Vladimir Gonchar utilizing Bill Holker’s original 3D model and texture framework, this package introduces a realistic flight profile in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, complete with spin capability and immersive sound from Warwick Carter. Enthusiasts who appreciate vintage radial-engine aircraft will find that this release delivers an authentic VFR experience if properly configured.

Detailed Look at This G-164 Implementation

This version of the Super AgCat B/600 incorporates expanded texture choices and refined avionics for general radio navigation. It also includes two newly accomplished liveries, a more elaborate VC arrangement, and a specialized 2D pop-up instrument panel. The release is geared for wide-screen monitors, supporting realistic engine operation gauges and providing a simplified means for VOR navigation. The integral spin attribute reflects genuine airframe characteristics, but structural limitations should be noted before attempting advanced maneuvers.

Engine Start-Up Steps and Control Layout

Although a quick start is possible (using Ctrl+E), the following realistic sequence is included for those preferring a procedure-based approach:

  • Ensure Fuel Control is enabled.
  • Set Mixture to Full Rich.
  • Push Prop Lever fully forward.
  • Crack the Throttle open by approximately 1/8 inch.
  • Verify Carb Heat is off and switch on the Master.
  • Prime the fuel system to raise pressure (use manual pumping or the optional electric boost pump). The “Low Fuel Pressure” lamp must stop illuminating, and the gauge must read above 3 psi.
  • Apply primer as needed if Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) is below 50°C.
  • Switch ignition to Both and engage the starter.
  • If using the boost pump, turn it off once the engine fires.
  • Confirm oil pressure is within limits.

Because the VC design includes only a handful of clickable zones, additional 2D panels are supplied for users who prefer a more direct method of adjusting the propeller lever and other controls. This dual setup provides flexibility for those who wish to manage engine parameters in greater detail.

Handling Notes and Recommended Flight Procedures

  • Begin rotation around 65-70 mph, transitioning to climb at 90 mph (35 in. Hg / 2200 RPM).
  • During cruise, typical speeds of 100-120 mph are common (25-30 in. Hg / 2000 RPM).
  • An approach at 70-75 mph is advised, touching down near 65 mph.
  • Although the airframe design allows spin capability, aerobatics are officially restricted due to G-force limitations.
  • Exercise caution while taxiing, avoiding power settings above 1500 RPM on the ground.

Simulator Installation Essentials

  • Extract the provided files and integrate all contents from the FSX folder into the main Microsoft Flight Simulator X directory.

On startup, the aircraft will default to a capacity with one pilot, two front-seat passengers, and a full 80 gallons of fuel. An extra baggage load can be applied if staying within the biplane’s weight envelope.

Creators and Supporters

All thanks go to Bill Holker for his remarkable 3D model creation and to Warwick Carter for supplying the distinctive sound package. The entire configuration and modifications for this release have been finalized by Vladimir Gonchar.

Special Dedication

This Grumman project is dedicated to Vladimir’s wife Anna, whose patience and understanding made the ongoing development process possible.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place files per the readme

Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.
  3. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
