FSX Questa Airport Scenery

Questa Airport (N24) comes to life with custom scenery that complements Northern New Mexico’s mountainous terrain, replacing the default field with homes, vegetation, refined ground markings, and local character while keeping the runway layout familiar. Built for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, it stays frame-rate friendly for smooth approaches among rugged peaks and canyon views.

Take in the impressive terrain around this custom-built version of Questa’s small airfield (N24) located in the mountainous northern area of New Mexico. This freeware add-on, engineered specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, introduces a thoughtfully enhanced backdrop that replaces a basic default layout with visually appealing details and local flair. Created by Bob Caparoula, it forms the third entry in his special New Mexico Small Airport set, and it showcases the tranquil charm of this high-altitude region while preserving frame rate stability.

Noteworthy Local Highlights

Positioned near sprawling peaks and rugged canyon vistas, this rendition brings an immersive twist to the actual Questa airfield. Although some artistic license has been used to add fresh elements, the overall size and rural character remain faithful. Additions such as residential structures, foliage clusters, and subtle ground markings help enrich the environment, encouraging virtual pilots to appreciate the authentic southwestern scenery.

Technical Design and Tools

Development for this upgrade employed the FSX SDK’s integrated scenery features, along with the Abacus Scenery Shortcut utility. These specialized resources enable seamless incorporation of custom scenery objects with clean geometry, allowing for a light performance footprint while still delivering eye-catching details. The end result is a reimagined yet functional airport that retains the main runway layout of N24.

Practical Installation Procedure

  1. Extract all .bgl files from the download package.
  2. Place them in the following directory (or a similar path, if customized):
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\scenery
  3. After launching FSX, the simulator typically detects and activates the new content automatically.

Smooth Performance

Despite the refined enhancements, the scenery remains highly frame-rate friendly, ensuring that even users with older setups can explore the region smoothly. This optimization comes from careful modeling and minimal resource overhead, making it suitable for both low-level and high-level flights in and out of this airport.

Freeware Release and Feedback

The mesmerizing views around Questa, along with the developer’s creative touches, underscore a dedication to bringing scenic realism to the flight simulation community.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
