To add passengers and cabin service to a flight simulator, use an aircraft with a modelled cabin, set passenger payload in its weight-and-balance system, then add a compatible passenger or ground-service utility for boarding, announcements, catering and baggage. No single add-on provides every feature in every simulator.
This applies generally to MSFS, FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane, but each platform handles aircraft models, payload and external utilities differently. Always check the exact simulator generation, aircraft and operating system supported by an add-on.
What kind of passenger add-on do you need?
Choose the add-on by the effect you want, because visible passengers, payload weight and cabin service are separate simulation layers.

How do you set up passenger boarding and cabin service?
The reliable method is to configure the aircraft first, let one system control payload, and start ground services only after the aircraft is parked in the state required by the utility.
- Check aircraft compatibility. Confirm that the utility supports your exact simulator and aircraft. Do not assume that an MSFS 2020 package works fully in MSFS 2024, or that an FSX add-on works in Prepar3D.
- Choose one payload authority. Load passengers through the aircraft EFB, its payload manager or the simulator's weight-and-balance page. If a passenger utility writes that weight into the aircraft automatically, do not enter the same passengers again.
- Distribute the load correctly. Use the aircraft's passenger stations rather than placing everyone in one station. Check total weight and centre of gravity before departure.
- Configure the doors. Match the boarding door, service doors and cargo doors to the aircraft profile. Custom aircraft often need a dedicated profile because their door coordinates differ from the default model.
- Prepare the aircraft for boarding. Park at a suitable stand, set the parking brake or chocks, and place engines, beacon and doors in the state requested by the utility. Exact conditions vary by package.
- Run the turnaround in order. Connect the jetway or stairs, begin boarding and baggage loading, request catering if supported, then close the doors after the utility reports completion.
- Configure cabin events. Select the correct audio device and set triggers for boarding music, safety announcements, seat-belt signs, cruise service and arrival. Some utilities trigger these automatically from the flight phase; others require manual commands.

Why are passengers not visible or services not starting?
Invisible passengers usually mean the aircraft lacks integrated passenger models, while failed ground services usually point to an incompatible profile, incorrect door position or unmet aircraft-state condition.
- The passenger count changes but the cabin stays empty: the add-on is changing payload or simulating passenger activity, not inserting 3D people. Use an aircraft that explicitly includes visible cabin passengers.
- Boarding remains unavailable: check parking brake or chocks, engines and beacon, the selected stand, open doors and whether the utility recognises the aircraft profile.
- Passengers walk to the wrong place: the boarding-door coordinates are wrong for that aircraft. Install or create the correct profile rather than moving the aircraft to compensate.
- The jetway or stairs miss the door: the scenery parking position or aircraft door geometry may not match. Try a suitable stand and confirm that the correct passenger door is assigned.
- The aircraft is unexpectedly overweight: passengers or baggage have probably been counted by both the aircraft loader and the external utility. Remove one load and check each payload station again.
- Announcements are silent: verify the utility's output device, simulator sound levels and any add-on-specific volume control. A Windows audio-device change can leave an external utility sending sound to the old output.
- The utility does not appear at all: confirm simulator version and platform support. Console editions cannot run external Windows executables or accept manually copied PC packages; their options are limited to supported in-sim content and aircraft features.
Can you add passengers without buying an add-on?
Yes, but the free approach usually provides only part of the experience: payload, cabin views, announcements or boarding simulation rather than a fully populated animated cabin.
- Use the simulator or aircraft's built-in payload system to represent passenger weight accurately.
- Choose freeware aircraft that explicitly include a modelled cabin, passenger figures or working passenger doors.
- Use a compatible freeware passenger utility for boarding times and cabin events. For example, the free FSX paX passenger utility simulates boarding delays and passenger movement during departure preparation.
For visible people, prioritise an aircraft with passengers built into its interior model. For realistic mass, use its payload manager. Choose a ground-service utility for the airport turnaround and a cabin utility for announcements or passenger management; combining those layers gives the most complete result without double-counting the load.
