Adjust Microsoft Flight Simulator screen size and safe area on Xbox, fix cropped menus and TV overscan, and choose the right display setting.
To adjust the Microsoft Flight Simulator safe area on Xbox, open Settings or Options, enter General Options, and find Safe Area under the graphics/display settings. Move the markers just inside the visible edges and apply. If that control is unavailable, disable TV overscan and use Xbox’s Calibrate TV tool.
How do I set the safe area in MSFS on Xbox?
Set the safe-area frame so every edge and corner marker remains visible, with only a small margin between the frame and the edge of the television.
- Open the simulator settings: From the main menu, select Settings or Options and then General Options.
- Find the display control: Check the graphics or display category for Safe Area. MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 arrange some options differently, so also inspect the interface or accessibility category if necessary.
- Adjust the frame: Use the indicated stick or directional controls to move the boundary until all four sides fit on screen. Do not pull it farther inward than necessary.
- Apply the change: Save or apply the setting rather than simply backing out, then check the toolbar, corner prompts and menu panels.
If your Xbox build has no separate Safe Area item, correct the picture through the Xbox display calibration and television settings instead. Menu UI Scale, where available, is a different control: it changes the size of text and panels rather than correcting a cropped video signal.
Should I change safe area, UI scale or screen resolution?
The correct setting depends on whether the interface, the complete video image or only the cockpit view is incorrectly sized.
| Symptom | Setting to change | What it fixes |
|---|---|---|
| Toolbar icons, notifications or corner prompts are clipped | MSFS Safe Area | Keeps interface elements inside the visible part of the screen |
| Menus fit but text and panels are too large or small | Menu UI Scale or interface scale | Changes interface size without changing the video output |
| The game and Xbox Guide are both cut off | Television overscan or aspect ratio | Restores the missing outer part of the complete image |
| The interface fits but the cockpit looks too close | Camera zoom or cockpit view | Changes field of view without altering the safe area |
| The image is soft but nothing is cropped | Xbox output resolution or supported display mode | Changes image clarity rather than its safe zone |
A mistake we see constantly is shrinking the interface to compensate for television overscan. That may make menus appear to fit, but it leaves the outside of the 3D picture cropped.
What if the edges are still cut off?
Persistent cropping after a safe-area adjustment usually means the television is enlarging the Xbox signal beyond the physical screen.
- Check the Xbox interface: Open the Xbox Guide or return to the Home screen. If its outer edges are also missing, the simulator is not causing the crop.
- Use an Xbox capture as a diagnostic: View the capture on another correctly fitted screen. If it contains the missing edges, the television is applying overscan; if the capture itself shows misplaced MSFS interface elements, revisit the in-game safe area.
- Run the console calibration: Open Xbox Settings, select General, then TV & display options, and run Calibrate TV. The tool shows what should be visible and helps identify an incorrect television picture mode.
- Disable overscan or zoom on the television: Look for a picture-size mode such as Screen Fit, Just Scan, Full Pixel or 1:1. Names vary by manufacturer. Avoid Zoom, Cinema, Stretch or similar modes that enlarge the signal.
- Check the correct HDMI input: Many televisions save aspect-ratio settings separately for each input, so changing the setting used by another device will not affect the Xbox.
Once the entire Xbox image is visible, return to MSFS and place the safe-area markers near the true screen edges. Otherwise, an earlier overcompensation can leave menus unnecessarily cramped.
Can I change Xbox resolution or aspect ratio inside MSFS?
No—Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox does not provide the same arbitrary full-screen resolution and aspect-ratio controls available on PC.
Set the Xbox output to a mode supported natively by the television, then let the simulator use its console rendering profile. Our guidance on matching simulator output to a display’s native resolution explains why this is the best starting point. MSFS may vary its internal rendering resolution for performance, but Safe Area does not control that behaviour.
Xbox users also cannot edit the desktop configuration file to force a custom size; our explanation of what UserCfg.opt controls on PC covers that distinction. Do not follow PC instructions that require changing this file on a console.
MSFS on Xbox is designed around a standard 16:9 console signal. On an ultrawide display, correct aspect mapping may produce side bars; stretching the signal fills the panel but distorts the cockpit. Our advice for setting up an ultrawide monitor without stretching the image explains the display-side choices.
