How does aerial refuelling work in flight simulators?

In real-world aviation and flight simulators, aerial refuelling works by bringing a receiver aircraft into tightly controlled formation behind a tanker, connecting to a flying boom or hose-and-drogue unit, and holding the correct position while fuel transfers. Contact logic, fuel modelling and tanker control vary by simulator, aircraft module and mission.

What does the simulator actually model?

A functional aerial-refuelling system must model compatible equipment, a valid contact envelope and a change in the receiver's fuel quantity.

  • Rendezvous and clearance: The receiver locates the tanker, joins formation and, in detailed military simulators, requests permission to move from pre-contact to contact.
  • Physical connection: The simulator detects whether the boom or probe is correctly positioned, often within a narrow tolerance for distance, alignment and closure rate.
  • Fuel transfer: Fuel moves from the tanker to the receiver, increasing fuel mass until the tanks are full, the requested amount is reached or contact is broken.
  • Disconnect logic: Leaving the permitted position, commanding a disconnect or exceeding system limits releases the boom or drogue.

What is the difference between boom and drogue refuelling?

Flying-boom and probe-and-drogue systems require different receiver equipment and different contact techniques.

A boom receiver cannot normally take fuel from a standard drogue, and an aircraft fitted only with a probe cannot use an unmodified boom. Some real tankers carry adapters or separate underwing hose units, but the simulator must explicitly support that configuration.

How do you perform aerial refuelling in a flight simulator?

The reliable method is to establish stable formation flight before attempting contact, then make corrections small enough that the tanker appears almost stationary.

  1. Confirm compatibility. Check that the receiver has the correct probe or receptacle and that both aircraft support functional fuel transfer rather than animation alone.
  2. Prepare the scenario. Start with space in the receiver's tanks and make sure the tanker has transferable fuel. A completely full receiver can connect correctly without showing any increase.
  3. Set the controls. Bind the refuelling door or probe, radio controls, trim and all primary flight axes. Remove controller jitter with a small dead zone, but avoid curves so aggressive that fine corrections become unpredictable.
  4. Rendezvous with the tanker. Use the mission briefing, radio frequency and navigation aid supplied by the scenario. Match heading and speed before moving close.
  5. Stabilise at pre-contact. Trim the receiver so it needs little control pressure. Hold a fixed position behind and below the tanker rather than immediately chasing the boom or basket.
  6. Request contact if required. Detailed simulations may reject the connection until the correct radio call has been made and the tanker has issued clearance.
  7. Move forward slowly. For boom refuelling, enter the boom envelope and follow the director lights. With a drogue, align the probe and basket while keeping most of your attention on the tanker's structure as a formation reference.
  8. Hold position during transfer. Use tiny throttle changes and allow time for the aircraft to respond. Disconnect cleanly when fuel is complete or if an oscillation starts to build.

Which controller settings make refuelling easier?

A clean, low-noise control response matters more than extreme sensitivity. Trim first, rest your hand lightly on the controls and make one correction at a time; repeated opposite inputs create pilot-induced oscillation.

Throttle control is usually the hardest part because jet engines respond after a delay. Avoid using speedbrakes to correct every small closure error, and do not use time acceleration near the tanker. Does aerial refuelling work in MSFS, DCS, FSX and X-Plane?

Support differs by simulator and aircraft, so the presence of a tanker model does not prove that fuel can be transferred.

Multiplayer introduces another limitation: boom, hose and contact animations may not be synchronised identically for every participant. A connection visible to the receiver might appear offset to another player, and some packages synchronise animation without synchronising fuel state.

Why am I connected but receiving no fuel?

A visible connection without increasing fuel usually means the receiver is full, the mission has not enabled transfer or the tanker is only an animated model.

Can any aircraft refuel from any tanker?

No. The receiver needs compatible real-world equipment and simulator coding for that specific refuelling method.

A modelled probe or receptacle may be cosmetic, especially on converted or freeware aircraft. The decisive test is not whether the parts touch visually, but whether the simulator recognises contact, increases fuel quantity and changes aircraft mass.

How realistic is simulated air-to-air refuelling?

The best implementations reproduce the formation geometry, clearance sequence, connection limits, fuel increase and automatic disconnects, but they still approximate parts of the real task.

Hose motion, wake turbulence, boom forces, depth perception and tanker-operator decisions vary greatly between simulators. Desktop pilots also lack physical acceleration cues, while monitor-based depth judgement can make the final few metres harder than expected. The most useful practice is therefore stable close formation and disciplined throttle control, not merely learning how to trigger the connection animation.
