Is the Aerosoft Twin Otter compatible with MSFS 2024?
Learn which Aerosoft Twin Otter versions work in MSFS 2024, why FSX/P3D editions fail, and how to check an MSFS 2020 installation safely.
No—not as a fully supported, native Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 aircraft. The Aerosoft Twin Otter built for MSFS 2020 may appear or load through 2024's legacy add-on support, but compatibility is not guaranteed. The older Twin Otter Extended for FSX/Prepar3D is incompatible, and repaints do not include the aircraft.
Which Aerosoft Twin Otter version do you have?
The product's target simulator determines whether it has any chance of working in MSFS 2024.
| Product or file | MSFS 2024 status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Aerosoft Twin Otter for MSFS 2020 | May work through legacy compatibility, but it is not automatically a native or fully supported MSFS 2024 aircraft | Use only the original package and check the exact build's compatibility information |
| Twin Otter Extended for FSX or Prepar3D | Incompatible | Run it in its intended simulator; it cannot be converted by copying folders |
| Twin Otter repaint or livery | Depends on both the livery format and the required base aircraft | Confirm that the listing explicitly names MSFS 2024 and your exact Twin Otter model |
MSFS 2024 can load many legacy packages, but complex aircraft may depend on gauges, compiled code, sound systems or flight-model behaviour that changed between simulators. Our guide to how MSFS 2020 add-on compatibility works in MSFS 2024 explains why appearing in the library is not proof that every system works.
How can I test the MSFS 2020 Twin Otter in MSFS 2024?
Existing PC owners can test the aircraft cautiously, provided they retain the original MSFS package and do not substitute an FSX or Prepar3D edition.
- Identify the product. Its documentation or installer must explicitly say Microsoft Flight Simulator or MSFS 2020. “Twin Otter Extended” and files labelled FSX or P3D belong to older simulators.
- Update the simulator first. Use the normal launcher and content-library process to bring MSFS 2024 and its installed content up to date before judging compatibility.
- Install from the original source. Follow any MSFS 2024-specific instructions supplied with your copy. Do not point an old installer at an arbitrary folder or copy only selected files. Our MSFS aircraft installation checks cover package structure and misplaced Community folders.
- Test without extra liveries. Temporarily disable Twin Otter repaints and unrelated aircraft modifications, then load a default livery at a simple airport.
- Check more than the exterior model. Verify throttle and propeller response, engine starts, cockpit controls, displays, sounds, lighting and any float, ski or door functions you intend to use. Loading successfully does not establish full compatibility.
Why is the Twin Otter missing or broken?
A missing aircraft usually indicates the wrong package or installation path; a visible but malfunctioning aircraft more often points to incomplete legacy compatibility.
- The file is only a repaint. Liveries require the specified payware base aircraft. For example, this RNZAF ski-equipped DHC-6 repaint listing requires an older Aerosoft aircraft for FSX or Prepar3D and provides no flyable aircraft for MSFS 2024.
- The package is nested too deeply. Manual installations can leave an extra folder above the package manifest, preventing the simulator from detecting it.
- An old installer targets MSFS 2020. It may place the aircraft in the earlier simulator's Community folder rather than the MSFS 2024 package location.
- A livery or modification conflicts with the aircraft. Remove optional repaints before blaming the base package.
- Only part of the aircraft is compatible. Dead controls, missing sounds, faulty propellers or non-functional displays mean the package should still be treated as incompatible, even if the model loads.
Does the Aerosoft Twin Otter work on Xbox or PS5?
It works on Xbox or PlayStation 5 only if a platform-approved MSFS 2024 edition is offered through that console's in-simulator content system and is available to your account.
A downloaded PC package cannot be copied into either console. Likewise, owning an FSX, Prepar3D or externally installed PC edition does not create a console entitlement.
Should you use the Twin Otter in MSFS 2024?
Use it only when your exact MSFS edition is identified as compatible and passes a complete systems test. Existing PC owners can try the MSFS 2020 package through legacy support, but anyone seeking a dependable installation should wait for an explicitly supported MSFS 2024 build rather than buying old editions, repaints or unofficially repackaged files.
