Why are AI aircraft not appearing at airport gates in FSX?

AI aircraft usually fail to appear at FSX airport gates because the active airport file has no suitable free parking spots, the traffic schedule has no aircraft on the ground at that time, or airline traffic is disabled. Missing AI models and conflicting AFCAD/BGL airport files are the other common causes.

What determines whether FSX parks AI aircraft at a gate?

FSX and FSX: Steam Edition park an AI aircraft only when a scheduled flight, a working aircraft model and a compatible unoccupied parking spot all line up. A terminal, painted stand or visible jetway does not prove that usable AI parking exists; the visual scenery and airport facility data are separate.

  • Schedule and density: The flight plan must place that aircraft at the airport on the selected day and time. Each traffic plan also has a density threshold, so a flight assigned to a higher percentage will not run when the Airline traffic slider is below it.
  • Parking size: The spot radius must accommodate the AI model. A wide-body will not use a stand defined only for a small aircraft.
  • Parking type: Gate, cargo, general-aviation and military spots are treated differently. The model's atc_parking_types entry should suit the available stand.
  • Airline code: Codes in aircraft.cfg help FSX select an appropriate coded stand, but they cannot overcome an undersized, occupied or disconnected parking position.
  • Taxi connectivity: The parking node needs a valid route into the airport taxi network. Broken or isolated links can leave a visually convincing gate unusable.

Which symptom points to the cause?

The pattern of missing traffic usually reveals whether the fault is global, package-specific or confined to one airport.

How do I diagnose empty airport gates in FSX?

Start with settings and schedules before editing scenery, because an AFCAD change cannot create traffic that was never scheduled to run.

  1. Raise the correct traffic slider. Temporarily increase Airline traffic density for airliners or General aviation traffic density for GA aircraft. Airport vehicle density does not control parked aeroplanes.
  2. Test another day and time. Add-on schedules may leave an airport quiet outside its operating periods. Try a known busy airport and allow FSX a few simulator minutes to populate traffic after loading.
  3. Compare with a default major airport. If gates fill there but not at the add-on airport, concentrate on that airport's BGL files and parking layout. If every airport is empty, the problem is more likely to be the traffic plans or aircraft.
  4. Check the AI models. A flight plan cannot spawn an aircraft whose referenced title= entry is missing or changed. Confirm that the model is installed under the FSX SimObjects\Airplanes folder and use our checks for restoring missing FSX AI aircraft if default or add-on models have vanished.
  5. Check traffic BGL compatibility. Legacy-format traffic files can prevent FSX-format plans from appearing. This is especially common in older traffic packages; our WOAI traffic troubleshooting steps cover the sliders, models and conflicting BGLs involved.
  6. Look for duplicate airport definitions. Two AFCAD-style files for the same airport can compete through scenery-library priority. Disable suspected duplicates one at a time, keep backups outside active scenery folders and reload FSX after each change.

Why do AI aircraft land and then disappear?

An AI aircraft that lands but never reaches a stand usually has no compatible free parking spot or no usable taxi route to one. FSX may remove it rather than leave it blocking the runway or taxiway.

This symptom proves that the schedule and aircraft model are functioning, so focus on parking capacity, spot radius, parking type and taxi links. It often appears after installing a replacement airport whose terminal looks more detailed but whose underlying parking layout contains fewer usable stands.

How do I fix AI gate parking in an AFCAD?

Edit the airport only after confirming that traffic works elsewhere and that the intended airport BGL is the one FSX is loading.

  1. Back up the add-on airport file. Do not overwrite stock FSX scenery files.
  2. Open the active airport definition. Inspect every relevant parking spot's radius, type, airline codes and connection to the taxi network.
  3. Add or correct parking carefully. Make spots large enough for their intended aircraft, but do not mark every gate as heavy-aircraft parking or FSX may place wide-bodies at unsuitable stands.
  4. Compile to a separate scenery folder. Give the corrected file appropriate scenery-library priority and disable obsolete duplicates rather than leaving several competing versions active.
  5. Reload and test at the scheduled time. Check departures as well as arrivals, because a departure that cannot obtain a parking position may never spawn.

Do airline parking codes force AI aircraft to use a gate?

Airline parking codes influence stand selection, but they do not guarantee it. FSX still requires a free spot of a suitable size and type, and it may use an uncoded compatible stand when the preferred coded gates are occupied.

Use the same code convention in the AI aircraft's atc_parking_codes entry and the airport parking spot. If aircraft still choose remote stands, check radius and parking type before adding more codes; a code cannot make an incompatible stand usable.
