How do I add static aircraft at airport gates in FSX?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Add static aircraft to FSX airport gates with scenery libraries and placement BGLs, plus fixes for missing models, textures and gate conflicts.

In FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, static aircraft are scenery objects, not flyable aircraft. Add them by installing airport scenery that includes the required aircraft library, or place an FSX-compatible library object with a scenery editor, compile the placement to BGL, and activate its scenery layer.

Static aircraft versus AI traffic

Use static aircraft for permanent ramp decoration; use AI traffic when aircraft need to arrive, depart, taxi or occupy gates according to a schedule.

If the aim is populated gates that change during the day, static models are the wrong solution. Use AI schedules instead, then follow our checks for AI aircraft missing from airport gates if the stands remain empty.

What is the easiest way to add parked aircraft?

The simplest method is to install airport scenery that already includes static aircraft and its required object library.

  1. Read the package instructions. Check whether the scenery includes its aircraft library or requires a separate library installation. This airport package with a documented static-aircraft library shows the usual arrangement.
  2. Preserve the folder structure. Library and placement BGL files normally go in a Scenery folder, while their texture files belong in the accompanying Texture folder.
  3. Activate the scenery area. Add the package through Settings > Scenery Library if its installer has not already done so.
  4. Restart FSX. Reloading ensures that the object library and placement BGL are both available.

Avoid scattering duplicate copies of the same library BGL across several active scenery areas. A shared object-library layer is cleaner unless the package specifically requires another arrangement.

How do I place static aircraft myself?

To create a custom layout, place an aircraft scenery object at the required coordinates and compile that placement into an FSX-format BGL.

  1. Create a separate scenery layer. A conventional structure is Addon Scenery\My Static Aircraft\Scenery with a matching Texture folder. Never overwrite a stock airport BGL.
  2. Install an FSX scenery-object library. It must contain aircraft models registered as library objects. A normal flyable aircraft's model BGL cannot simply be copied into scenery and selected as a static object.
  3. Open the airport in an FSX-compatible scenery editor. The editor must be able to load library objects and compile FSX placement BGLs.
  4. Select the aircraft object. Position it using the gate markings, then set the heading so its nose follows the lead-in line. Static objects are not automatically tied to the parking spot beneath them.
  5. Set the elevation correctly. Use the editor's ground-level or AGL option where available. An incorrect MSL elevation is a common cause of floating or sunken aircraft.
  6. Compile the placement. Put the resulting BGL in your layer's Scenery folder and place any required textures in Texture.
  7. Activate and test the layer. Give it higher priority than any airport layer whose exclusion rectangles might suppress it, restart FSX and inspect every stand from ground level.

The placement process is the same in boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. Their installation roots can differ, and Windows permissions may block changes inside protected folders, so building the layer elsewhere and then activating it through the Scenery Library is often safer.

Why don't my static aircraft appear?

Missing static aircraft usually mean that FSX can read the placement BGL but cannot find its referenced library object, or that a scenery setting or exclusion is hiding it.

  • No aircraft at all: confirm that both the placement BGL and aircraft-library BGL are inside active scenery areas. A placement BGL contains a library reference, not the model itself.
  • Visible only at higher settings: raise Scenery complexity or lower the object's display-complexity threshold in the scenery project.
  • Missing or plain textures: verify that every supplied texture is in the Texture folder paired with the active library layer.
  • Floating or buried model: correct the AGL/MSL setting and check whether another airport package applies a different elevation or flatten.
  • Duplicate aircraft: look for two active versions of the airport or duplicate placement BGLs.
  • Still invisible: move the placement layer above the airport scenery. A higher-priority exclusion rectangle can remove objects placed by a lower layer.

How do I prevent static aircraft from blocking gates?

Place static aircraft only on stands that you do not want the player or AI traffic to occupy, because scenery objects do not reserve airport parking.

If a static model shares a live gate, FSX may spawn another aircraft directly through it. Use remote or decorative stands, or remove that parking position from your edited airport facility data. Do not place a static model over a gate selected as a user starting location.

When unwanted static aircraft are already built into another scenery package, disabling a random BGL can remove much more than the aeroplane. Our guide to identifying and excluding static scenery objects explains the safer approach.

At large hubs, favour purpose-built, low-detail static models and use them sparingly. Complex converted flyable aircraft consume unnecessary rendering resources, while their redistribution may also breach the original author's licence.
