To fly a Cessna 172 in a flight simulator, start on a long runway in calm weather, use full power, hold the centreline with rudder, rotate at about 55 KIAS, climb near 75 KIAS and trim. Approach around 65 KIAS, reduce power, flare gently and touch down on the main wheels.
These are useful training references rather than universal limits. Across general flight simulators—including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX—the exact speeds, engine controls and checklists depend on the simulated C172 variant, aircraft weight and flap setting.
What controls do you need to fly a Cessna 172?
A joystick or yoke with a throttle is the practical minimum; rudder pedals or a twist-grip rudder axis make take-offs and landings much easier. Keyboard control is possible, but its abrupt inputs encourage overcorrection.
- Pitch and roll: yoke or joystick fore-and-aft and left-to-right axes.
- Yaw: rudder pedals or a twist axis for keeping the aircraft coordinated and straight.
- Power: throttle axis, with mixture and carburettor heat controls if the model simulates them.
- Trim: assign nose-up and nose-down trim buttons where they can be reached without looking.
- Landing controls: assign flaps, wheel brakes and a cockpit-view reset.

Which Cessna 172 speeds should you use?
A useful beginner target is approximately 55 KIAS for rotation, 70–80 KIAS in the climb and 60–70 KIAS on final approach. Fly indicated airspeed, not groundspeed, and use the checklist or placards supplied with the particular aircraft whenever they disagree with these broad references.

High elevation changes true airspeed and groundspeed, but you still fly the appropriate indicated airspeed. A steady headwind is not a reason to add a large speed margin; in gusts, use the correction recommended by the aircraft checklist. Carrying an unnecessary extra 10 or 20 knots is a common cause of floating and runway overruns.
How do you take off, fly a circuit and land?
The simplest training flight is one circuit from a long runway in daylight, with light wind, no failures and the engine already running. Once that is comfortable, our complete C172 cockpit-to-landing sequence adds start-up checks and a more detailed go-around procedure.
- Prepare the aircraft. Set take-off trim, use the normal take-off flap setting specified by the model and check that the controls move in the correct direction. Keep the mixture rich near sea level; at high-density-altitude airports, lean it according to the aircraft checklist.
- Begin the take-off roll. Release the brakes and apply full power smoothly. Confirm that engine indications are normal, then use small right-rudder inputs to counter the C172's tendency to turn left.
- Rotate near 55 KIAS. Ease the yoke back just enough to raise the nose. Pulling hard can cause a tail strike, stall warning or immediate loss of directional control.
- Establish the climb. Set a pitch attitude that produces roughly 70–80 KIAS, keep the wings level and trim away sustained yoke pressure. Do not chase every one-knot change.
- Level off smoothly. Begin lowering the nose before reaching the target altitude; a useful lead is about 10 per cent of the vertical speed. At 500 feet per minute, start roughly 50 feet early. Let the aircraft accelerate, reduce to the model's cruise power and retrim.
- Fly the circuit. Use shallow turns at first and maintain the published circuit altitude. Avoid steep banks close to the ground because pulling to hold altitude raises the stall speed.
- Configure in stages. Reduce power on the downwind or base leg, allow the speed to fall and extend each flap stage only below its permitted speed. Sudden full-flap extension can produce a large pitch change.
- Stabilise the final approach. Aim for roughly 65 KIAS unless the model's checklist specifies another speed. Use pitch mainly to control airspeed and power mainly to adjust the glide path; each affects both, so make small, paired corrections.
- Flare and land. Reduce power near the runway, shift your view towards the far end and gradually raise the nose as the aircraft enters ground effect. Hold it just above the surface until the main wheels touch, then lower the nose wheel gently and brake only as required.
Why is the Cessna 172 difficult to control in the simulator?
Most C172 control problems come from excessive inputs, poor trim or conflicting controller assignments rather than the aircraft itself. The aeroplane responds slowly enough that a second large correction often arrives just as the first one takes effect.

A mistake we see constantly is trying to force the C172 onto an exact altitude by moving the yoke continuously. Set the attitude, allow the aircraft to settle, adjust power and then trim. Small deviations are safer than a growing pitch oscillation.
When should you go around?
Go around whenever the approach is unstable, the aircraft is badly misaligned, the speed is excessive or the landing uses more runway than expected. Apply full power, control the pitch, select carburettor heat cold if the fitted system requires it, establish a positive climb and retract the flaps in stages rather than removing them all at once.
After consistent calm-weather circuits, practise slow flight, steeper turns, flapless landings and moderate crosswinds one skill at a time. Keep the same aircraft and airport while learning; changing weather, controller settings and C172 variants together makes it much harder to identify what went wrong.
