What happens in an ATP checkride, and how do you prepare?

An FAA airline transport pilot (ATP) checkride is a practical test of command-level knowledge, instrument flying, aircraft control, systems management, crew co-ordination and judgement. It normally includes an oral examination and a flight or approved simulator evaluation, often combined with a type-rating test for the aircraft.

In our Aviation & Real-World Flying coverage, “ATP checkride” means the FAA practical test. Other authorities use terms such as skill test and apply different licensing rules. There is no universal test duration or identical sequence: the aircraft, rating, approved training programme and evaluator’s plan of action all affect the profile.

What happens during an ATP checkride?

The evaluator works through the applicable Airline Transport Pilot and Type Rating Airman Certification Standards (ACS), assessing knowledge, risk management and flying skill through realistic operating scenarios.

Knowledge questioning can continue throughout the practical test rather than ending with a clearly separated oral. In a crewed aircraft, the applicant must use the other pilot properly without surrendering command responsibility or expecting that pilot to correct mistakes.

Is ATP-CTP the same as the ATP checkride?

No. The Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) is a prerequisite for the FAA multiengine-airplane ATP knowledge test in the usual certification path; it is not the ATP practical test and does not by itself prepare an applicant for a specific aircraft type.

Before scheduling the ride, confirm whether the application is for an unrestricted ATP, a restricted ATP, an added class rating or an ATP issued alongside a type rating. How should you prepare for an ATP checkride?

The strongest preparation treats the ACS, aircraft manuals and approved operating procedures as one integrated syllabus.

  1. Audit eligibility before paying for the test. Have the training provider check experience totals, category and class time, knowledge-test status, endorsements and application details. A logbook interpretation problem discovered on test day can stop the ride before it starts.
  2. Turn the ACS into a study matrix. Mark every applicable knowledge, risk-management and skill element, then attach a manual reference or training event to it. Read the notes and limitations for each area rather than studying only the manoeuvre names.
  3. Know systems beyond switch positions. Be able to explain what powers a system, what is lost after a failure, which indications confirm the problem and why the checklist takes a particular action. Give concise answers first; add detail when asked.
  4. Memorise only designated memory items. Learn limitations, call-outs and immediate actions exactly as required by the aircraft or operator. For everything else, use the checklist rather than improvising a half-remembered procedure.
  5. Practise complete scenarios. Run from aircraft acceptance through shutdown, including briefings, FMS changes, missed approaches, diversions and failures at inconvenient moments.   6. Rehearse automation failures and raw-data flying. State active and armed modes, verify changes on the flight-mode annunciator and disconnect automation early if it is increasing workload. Do not keep pressing buttons while the aircraft departs from the intended flight path.
  7. Complete a realistic mock oral and practical test. Use an instructor who will allow mistakes to develop instead of coaching each step. The debrief should identify the cause—knowledge, scan, procedure or workload—not merely the visible error.

Which training tool should you use?

Use the most representative approved device available for handling, failures and crew procedures, while reserving desktop simulation for low-risk repetition.

What causes applicants to fail an ATP checkride?

Most unsuccessful ATP rides result from weak command decisions or loss of aircraft control, not from one obscure fact.

  • Automation confusion: the applicant selects a mode but does not verify what the aircraft actually captured. Announce and cross-check every consequential mode change.
  • Continuing an unstable approach: trying to rescue a poor approach usually creates more deviations. Apply the stated stabilisation criteria and go around promptly.
  • Poor engine-out control: delayed rudder, incorrect trim or fixation on the failed system allows heading and altitude to deteriorate. Control the aircraft before diagnosing the problem.
  • Checklist misuse: rushing past immediate actions or attempting to recite an entire non-memory checklist creates omissions. Perform approved memory items, then read and verify the checklist.
  • Weak performance reasoning: quoting a number without its assumptions does not demonstrate command knowledge. Be ready to explain runway, weather, configuration and obstacle implications.
  • Passive crew management: failing to assign tasks or monitor the other pilot wastes the benefit of a crew. Give clear instructions and verify the response.
  • Failure to correct a deviation: a brief excursion is different from allowing the aircraft to remain outside standards. Recognise it, correct it and prevent the correction from causing another deviation.

An unsafe action, repeated failure to meet the ACS, lack of required knowledge or evaluator intervention can make the test unsatisfactory. Passing depends on the complete performance; there is no reliable “gouge” that replaces understanding the aircraft and standards.

What happens if you fail or the test is interrupted?

A failed ATP practical test results in a notice of disapproval, followed by additional training, the required instructor endorsement and a retest.

The retest commonly concentrates on deficient areas, but the evaluator may reassess other tasks needed to establish competence. If weather, aircraft serviceability or another acceptable circumstance prevents completion, the evaluator can issue a discontinuance rather than a failure; the document states what credit remains and the conditions for completing the test.

After a successful test, the evaluator completes the certification paperwork and normally issues a temporary certificate reflecting the ATP certificate, type rating or applicable restrictions earned during the event.
