What does the instrument rating checkride cover?

The checkride combines a ground discussion with a flight test, and the examiner assesses knowledge, risk management and flying skill throughout both portions. The current ACS is the controlling standard; use its task references and tolerances rather than relying on an old study outline.

Your knowledge-test report identifies deficient subjects. Be ready to explain each one because the instructor must review those deficiencies and the examiner can revisit them during the ground portion.

Check eligibility before booking the test

A Part 61 instrument-airplane applicant should have a flight instructor audit every requirement and logbook entry before arranging the checkride. The headline aeronautical-experience requirements include:

  • At least 50 hours of cross-country time as pilot in command, including 10 hours in airplanes.
  • At least 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time in the required areas of operation.
  • At least 15 hours of instrument training from an authorised instrument instructor in an airplane.
  • At least three hours of instrument training in an appropriate airplane within the two calendar months preceding the practical test.
  • The required 250-nautical-mile instrument cross-country along airways or ATC-directed routing, with an instrument approach at each airport and three different kinds of approaches using navigation systems.

Approved aviation training devices may provide credit only within their authorisation and the applicable rules. An ordinary home simulator does not create loggable instrument training merely because its software models IFR flight. Part 141 applicants follow their approved course requirements rather than the Part 61 totals above.

Have your instructor check dates, aircraft category, instructor qualifications, simulated-instrument entries, safety-pilot details where applicable and the exact wording of each endorsement. A missing signature or an entry logged in the wrong category can stop the test before the oral begins.

How should I prepare for the instrument oral exam?

Prepare for the oral by explaining a complete IFR flight rather than memorising isolated answers. Ask your instructor to interrupt the scenario with deteriorating weather, failed equipment, a changed clearance or an unavailable approach.

  1. Build a defensible weather decision. Interpret observations, forecasts, winds, icing risk, thunderstorms and NOTAMs, then state why you would depart, delay, reroute or cancel. Anti-ice or de-ice equipment does not by itself make an aircraft approved for flight into known icing.
  2. Apply alternate and fuel rules. The familiar 1-2-3 rule determines whether an alternate is required; it does not determine whether a particular alternate is legal. Check published alternate limitations and calculate fuel to the destination, then to the alternate when required, followed by the regulatory reserve.
  3. Prove the aircraft is legal and suitable. Be able to find required inspections, airworthiness information, operating limitations, equipment requirements and deferred-defect records. Know the aircraft’s electrical, pitot-static, vacuum or glass-panel systems and the equipment-specific failure indications.

  5. Understand your installed navigator. Know database status, approach eligibility, integrity monitoring, waypoint sequencing, CDI sensitivity, OBS or suspend behaviour and the difference between loading and activating a procedure. A mistake we see constantly is treating instrument currency as proof of proficiency. Be able to explain the FAA currency requirements, how approaches and holding are recorded, when a safety pilot is required and why a legally current pilot may still be unsafe in low weather.

Flight preparation that transfers to the checkride

The most effective flight preparation consists of complete, uninterrupted mock checkrides followed by an ACS-based debrief. Repeating one familiar approach teaches less than managing a realistic clearance from preflight planning through shutdown.

  1. Fly the scenario from the beginning. Copy and read back the clearance, set frequencies and navigation sources, brief the departure, complete checks and maintain situational awareness while communicating.
  2. Use short mode call-outs. Confirm the active navigation source, active waypoint or leg, armed mode, captured mode, altitude selection and what the automation should do next. A magenta route is no help if the CDI is still using VLOC, or vice versa.
  3. Brief every approach consistently. Identify the final approach course, crossing altitudes, final approach fix, DA or MDA, missed-approach point and first missed instructions. Review how guidance, source selection and minima differ between ILS and RNAV approaches if those distinctions are not automatic.
  4. Introduce failures at busy moments. Practise loss of a primary display, attitude source, communications, navigation source or autopilot without surrendering basic aircraft control. Diagnose only after establishing a safe attitude, power setting and flight path.
  5. Practise the missed approach in full. Apply power, establish the correct attitude, configure the aircraft, climb to the required altitude and follow the published routing. Know how the installed navigator sequences beyond the missed-approach point; the required action varies by unit.
  6. Debrief against the ACS. Record the task, deviation, cause and corrective action. “Altitude wandered” is not enough; identify whether the cause was poor trim, fixation, an incorrect power setting or late configuration.

Do not spend excessive attention naming a textbook hold entry while losing control of the aircraft. The standard entries are recommendations; selecting a safe entry, remaining in protected airspace and correcting for wind matter more. Practise circling approaches when applicable to the aircraft, airport and examiner’s plan, including an immediate missed approach if visual references are lost.

Can a home flight simulator help with checkride preparation?

A home flight simulator is useful for procedural repetition, avionics practice and workload management, but it cannot reproduce aircraft control feel or replace required instruction. Our explanation of what home simulation can and cannot teach a real-world pilot sets the appropriate limits.

Use the same aircraft type, panel layout and navigator as the checkride aircraft where practical. Rehearse clearance entry, holds, procedure turns, source changes, approach briefings and missed approaches using a structured gate-to-gate IFR simulator workflow. Finish sessions without pausing, repositioning or changing the weather to rescue a poor setup.

Unless the complete simulator is an FAA-approved training device used under the relevant conditions, treat the session as unlogged study. Even an approved device has credit limits and documentation requirements, so confirm those with your instructor rather than assuming all simulated time counts.

What should I bring on checkride day?

Bring the applicant documents, instructor records, planning material and an airworthy IFR aircraft agreed with the examiner. Confirm the examiner’s document checklist beforehand, but expect to need:

  • Government-issued identification, pilot certificate and the applicable medical qualification.
  • A completed practical-test application and the original knowledge-test report.
  • Your logbook or training records with the required experience and endorsements.
  • The aircraft airworthiness certificate, registration, operating limitations, weight-and-balance information and relevant maintenance records.
  • Evidence that required inspections and IFR equipment checks are valid for the proposed operation.
  • Current charts and data appropriate to the planned flight, plus the agreed view-limiting device.
  • A completed cross-country plan with weather, performance, fuel, alternates and risk assessment.

Check the aircraft several days beforehand. Verify database status, navigation equipment, pitot heat, alternate static source, circuit breakers, autopilot operation if fitted, and any inoperative equipment. Do not discover during the preflight that a required inspection has expired or that the aircraft flight manual supplement is missing.

A practical readiness test

You are ready when you can complete a realistic mock checkride without instructor prompting, remain within the current ACS standards and explain the reasoning behind each significant decision. You should also be able to recognise and correct a developing deviation before it becomes unsafe.

Delay the test if success still depends on receiving a familiar approach, avoiding partial-panel work or getting benign weather. Sound judgement includes refusing an unsafe or illegal flight; pressing on to satisfy a booking is exactly the external-pressure error the checkride is designed to expose.
