What is the best flight simulator for Xbox Series S?

Ian Stephens
In short

The best flight simulator for Xbox Series S is MSFS 2024. Compare editions, performance limits, controls, storage and common fixes.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is the best flight simulator for Xbox Series S. It gives the console the strongest mix of realistic aircraft, worldwide scenery, live weather and structured flying activities. The Standard edition is the sensible choice unless a higher edition contains specific aircraft or handcrafted airports you know you will use.

Why is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 best on Series S?

MSFS 2024 stands apart by combining detailed civilian aircraft with a streamed global world, changing weather, training, challenges and a career mode. It runs natively on Xbox Series S and includes the same core simulation and activities as the Series X version.

The Series S does make visual compromises. Expect lower rendering resolution, shorter detail distances and less headroom at dense airports than Series X, especially when using complex airliners, live traffic and detailed add-on scenery together. Our Series S and Series X performance comparison explains where the more powerful console makes a visible difference.

For realistic civil aviation, MSFS 2024 is the clear choice. Combat and arcade flying games may be more immediately action-focused, but they do not provide the same worldwide flying environment or cockpit systems.

Should you choose MSFS 2024 or MSFS 2020?

New Series S users should generally choose MSFS 2024, while existing MSFS 2020 owners may prefer to keep using it until their favourite aircraft and scenery are confirmed as compatible.

MSFS 2020 remains an excellent simulator rather than an obsolete one. The practical differences are covered in our comparison of MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024.

Which MSFS 2024 edition is best for Xbox Series S?

The Standard edition is best for most Series S owners because every edition uses the same simulation engine, weather system and underlying world.

Higher editions add selected Microsoft aircraft and handcrafted airports; they do not improve frame rate, resolution or general scenery quality. Check the included-aircraft list and pay extra only when it contains something you specifically intend to fly. Our MSFS 2024 edition breakdown explains the differences without treating the largest package as the automatic choice.

The Xbox Series S has no optical drive, so it requires digital access to the simulator. A physical Xbox disc cannot be used with this console.

How well does MSFS 2024 run on Xbox Series S?

MSFS 2024 provides a credible console simulation on Series S, but demanding aircraft, busy hubs and heavy traffic can expose the console’s limited performance headroom.

A mistake we see constantly is treating every stutter as a graphics problem. Blurred or slowly forming terrain often points to content streaming or network congestion, while black cockpit displays, crashes or severe slowdown at a detailed airport can indicate that the aircraft, scenery and traffic combination is placing too much pressure on the console.

  1. Check the connection. Use wired Ethernet where practical, or a strong wireless connection without simultaneous large downloads. MSFS 2024 streams substantial scenery and content data.
  2. Quit the simulator fully. After an update, failed online session or prolonged Quick Resume state, close the application from the Xbox dashboard and start it afresh.
  3. Simplify the flight. Reduce live traffic, ground aircraft and multiplayer activity where the available settings permit it. Test the same aircraft at a default, less demanding airport.
  4. Isolate add-ons. Remove or disable newly installed Marketplace content before assuming the base simulator is faulty. Add complex scenery and aircraft back one at a time.
  5. Leave storage headroom. Keep space available on the internal SSD or compatible expansion storage. Treat deletion of Xbox reserved space as a last resort because downloaded simulator content may need to be installed again.

What are the Xbox Series S limitations?

The largest restrictions concern add-ons, external software and display options rather than the basic flying experience.

  • Xbox has no user-accessible Community folder, so PC freeware and manually installed mods cannot be added.
  • Console add-ons must be distributed through the simulator’s Xbox-compatible Marketplace system.
  • PC-only utilities, external programs and specialist online-network clients cannot run directly on the console.
  • Virtual reality is not supported by the Xbox version.
  • Graphics adjustment is much less granular than on PC.

Do you need a yoke for Microsoft Flight Simulator on Series S?

An Xbox controller is enough to start, but a mouse and keyboard make cockpit interaction and text entry much easier. A yoke, throttle or joystick is optional and should be bought only if it is explicitly marked as Xbox-compatible; an ordinary PC USB controller will not necessarily work.

For a practical arrangement covering controls, displays and accessories at different budgets, see our Xbox flight simulator hardware setup guide. For most Series S owners, the sensible order is controller first, mouse and keyboard second, then dedicated flight controls once they know which aircraft they prefer.
