Check whether the aircraft models its electrical, fuel, navigation and engine systems, not merely whether the cockpit switches move. FlightGear’s community aircraft range from simple models to detailed recreations, while DCS aircraft and modules differ in system complexity and control style. GeoFS and YSFlight are better treated as accessible flying platforms than switch-by-switch cockpit trainers.
No home simulator automatically qualifies as an approved training device. Training credit depends on an approved combination of hardware, software and operating conditions, even when the flight model and avionics appear convincing.
What hardware and controls do free flight simulators need?
GeoFS and YSFlight suit the lightest hardware, FlightGear occupies the middle ground, and DCS World places the greatest demands on graphics performance, memory and storage.
A keyboard and mouse will establish whether a simulator runs, but a gamepad or joystick makes pitch and roll far easier to control. - Confirm the platform and free model. Check that the available build supports your operating system and that it is a complete simulator rather than a restricted demo.
- Launch default content first. Use an included aircraft, airport or map before adding community files. Installing several add-ons immediately makes crashes and missing textures much harder to diagnose.
- Set one control axis at a time. Bind pitch, roll, yaw and throttle, then remove duplicate assignments. Two devices controlling the same axis commonly cause jumping throttles, unwanted rudder or an aircraft that continually banks.
