The catch is that FlightGear aircraft are built by different contributors. DCS World: best free combat environment
DCS World provides the most convincing combat setting in this group, but the distinction between a free platform and a free helicopter matters. The base simulator is free, while its official helicopter modules are paid products. Flying a helicopter for nothing requires a compatible community mod.
Unofficial modules vary in flight-model accuracy and cockpit depth, and a DCS update may stop an older mod from loading. Check its stated dependencies before installation: some community aircraft require another paid module despite being described as free.
Most standalone aircraft mods belong under %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft, not inside the main DCS installation. If the helicopter does not appear, an extra wrapper folder after extraction, an incorrect Saved Games branch or a missing dependency is usually responsible.
GeoFS: best no-install choice
GeoFS is the simplest way to try helicopter flying in a web browser. Its free tier is suitable for basic hovering, circuits and understanding how cyclic, collective and pedals work together.
It is not a substitute for FlightGear or a high-detail DCS module. Systems are lighter, control feedback is limited and browser performance can affect precision close to the ground. Its advantage is immediate access on hardware where installing a large desktop simulator is impractical.
X-Plane demo: best for evaluating rotor physics
The X-Plane demo is useful for testing its helicopter handling and confirming that a joystick, pedals and throttle axis are recognised correctly. It uses the simulator's underlying flight model, but operating time and scenery coverage are restricted.
That makes it an evaluation tool rather than a permanent free helicopter simulator. For unrestricted flying, X-Plane requires a paid licence.

Are Microsoft Flight Simulator and free add-ons included?
Microsoft Flight Simulator is not a free simulator, even when the helicopter itself is freeware. The same applies to a free aircraft made for any paid edition of X-Plane, FSX or Prepar3D.

Why is the helicopter impossible to hover?
Most uncontrollable hovering is caused by incorrect axes, excessive control movement or an unstable frame rate rather than a fundamentally bad simulator.
- Bind collective rather than ordinary throttle. Collective changes blade pitch and lift. Engine throttle may remain at a governed flight setting once the rotor is running.
- Check rotor RPM before raising collective. Pulling maximum collective with insufficient rotor speed can prevent take-off or collapse RPM.
- Remove duplicate axis assignments. A twist grip and rudder pedals controlling yaw simultaneously will produce unexplained spinning or oscillation.
- Calibrate every axis. Fix reversed collective movement in the control settings and use only enough dead zone to eliminate genuine sensor noise.
- Use small inputs. A helicopter needs continuous corrections around the control centre; large fixed-wing-style movements cause overcorrection.
- Stabilise performance. Reduce demanding scenery, shadows or traffic settings if frame-time spikes make control response irregular near the ground.
What controls do free helicopter simulators need?
A joystick with a twist axis is the practical minimum, while separate rudder pedals and a throttle lever assigned as collective make hovering much easier. Keyboard controls are adequate for loading and testing an aircraft, but their all-or-nothing inputs are poorly suited to precise rotorcraft control.
