Best free helicopter mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Compare the best free helicopter mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator, with top picks, version caveats, control tips and installation fixes.
The best free helicopter mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator are the HPG H135 for an accessible modern twin, RotorSimPilot’s H125 or R44 for hands-on utility flying, the Delta Simulations UH-60M for military operations, and the SA 342 Gazelle for a light, agile rotorcraft. Compatibility depends heavily on simulator version.
Best free MSFS helicopter mods compared
The HPG H135 is our best all-round freeware choice for MSFS 2020, while the H125 and R44 suit pilots who want more direct, demanding handling.
| Free helicopter | Best for | Why choose it | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| HPG H135 | Beginners, sightseeing and medical flights | Modern glass cockpit, twin-engine layout and approachable handling | Uses custom systems and flight-model logic; verify support before using it in MSFS 2024 |
| RotorSimPilot H125 | Mountain and utility flying | Responsive single-engine helicopter with good visibility and a practical utility character | Some releases or configurations may need additional components documented with the package |
| RotorSimPilot R44 | Piston-helicopter training | Light controls make it useful for circuits, hovering practice and short cross-country flights | Less forgiving than the H135 and particularly sensitive to large control inputs |
| Delta Simulations UH-60M | Heavy military operations | Offers the speed, scale and handling character missing from smaller civilian helicopters | Systems completeness, performance demands and simulator compatibility can vary by release |
| SA 342 Gazelle package and manual | Fast, agile military flying | Compact rotorcraft suited to low-level routes and precise manoeuvring | Read the compatibility notes and installation instructions before adding it to a newer simulator build |
These are not interchangeable experiences. Choose the H135 for the easiest entry, the R44 for training discipline, the H125 for utility work, the UH-60M for a heavier military machine, or the Gazelle for speed and agility. Our freeware MSFS helicopter library provides additional rotorcraft to browse.
If the Cabri G2 or Bell 407 came with your simulator edition, they are included aircraft rather than freeware mods. They remain useful reference points because their native integration can expose whether a handling problem comes from an add-on or from the control profile.
Which free MSFS helicopter is best for beginners?
The HPG H135 is generally the easiest freeware helicopter to start with because its modern cockpit and approachable control behaviour reduce the initial workload.
Begin in calm weather, use a light fuel load and practise lifting into a low hover before attempting a circuit. The R44 demands smaller cyclic and pedal movements; treating it like an aeroplane with large, delayed inputs usually starts an oscillation that becomes difficult to stop.
No helicopter mod can compensate for an unsuitable control profile. A joystick can operate the cyclic, a throttle lever can serve as the collective, and rudder pedals or a twist axis can control anti-torque. Our helicopter control and flying set-up covers the bindings and first-hover technique in detail.
Do free helicopter mods work in MSFS 2024?
An MSFS 2020 helicopter mod is not automatically compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, even when the aircraft appears in the selection screen.
Some freeware helicopters were created before native rotorcraft support and use custom flight-model code or an external framework. In MSFS 2024, the model may load while the displays, governor, controls or rotor physics fail. Use only a release whose documentation explicitly names your simulator version; copying an older package across and hoping it works is not a reliable compatibility test.
- MSFS 2020 on PC: offers the broadest support for older Community-folder helicopter projects.
- MSFS 2024 on PC: can use Community packages, but each helicopter and dependency needs declared 2024 compatibility.
- Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5/PS5 Pro: cannot sideload PC Community-folder freeware. Console users are limited to compatible content distributed through the simulator’s approved in-sim system.
How do I install a free helicopter mod?
Most free helicopter mods install like any other Community-folder aircraft, but older projects may include a required flight-model framework or several package folders.
- Check the supported simulator. Read the package description and manual for MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 support, dependencies and any required base aircraft.
- Remove obsolete copies. Do not keep old and new revisions of the same helicopter side by side; duplicate package identities can prevent loading or produce mixed files.
- Extract the archive fully. The usable package folder normally contains files such as
manifest.jsonandlayout.json. A common mistake is placing an extra wrapper folder in the Community folder. - Copy every required package. Follow the supplied folder structure rather than combining separate components manually. Our Community-folder aircraft installation guide explains how to find the correct location for each PC installation type.
- Create a helicopter control profile. Map cyclic, collective and anti-torque controls separately, then restart the simulator before testing the aircraft.
Why does the helicopter spin or refuse to lift?
Uncontrolled spinning usually comes from missing, reversed or duplicated anti-torque bindings; failure to lift often means the collective has been mapped as an aeroplane throttle.
- Aircraft is missing: check for a nested folder and confirm that the package files are not still inside the downloaded archive.
- Rotor turns but there is no lift: bind the control intended for collective blade pitch, not only the engine throttle axis.
- Helicopter yaws immediately: inspect every connected controller for duplicate rudder or anti-torque assignments, reversed axes and assistance settings fighting the pedals.
- Displays remain blank: install the documented dependency and confirm that it supports the same simulator version.
- Handling is wildly unstable: remove conflicting legacy flight-model components, start with calm weather and make smaller cyclic inputs. Avoid copying an aeroplane profile unchanged.
A helicopter that loads successfully is not necessarily functioning correctly. Test collective response, pedal authority, engine governing and cockpit displays before committing to a longer flight.
