Best graphics mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find the best graphics mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator, covering scenery, seasons, clouds and ReShade, with performance and compatibility advice.

The best graphics mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator are high-quality regional scenery, handcrafted airports and landmarks, We Love VFR objects, seasonal vegetation packs and carefully tuned cloud presets. Prioritise scenery for places you actually fly; shader injectors such as ReShade are better for screenshots than for dependable everyday flying.

Best MSFS graphics mods by use case

For most pilots, the best order is local scenery first, object coverage second, then colour or weather effects.

PriorityGraphics modBest forMain caveat
1Regional scenery and photogrammetryVFR flying over a familiar city or regionCan consume substantial storage and conflict with other scenery covering the same coordinates
2Handcrafted airports and landmark packsAirliner operations, approaches and low-level sightseeingOlder packages may duplicate objects added by World or City Updates
3We Love VFR regional object packsAdding chimneys, masts, cooling towers and other useful VFR referencesDense object coverage can increase main-thread load, especially around cities
4Season and vegetation packsMaking foliage colours and tree coverage better match the time of yearCompatibility differs sharply between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024
5Cloud and weather preset packsPlanned screenshots, cinematic flights and controlled weather scenariosPresets do not improve Live Weather while Live Weather is active
6ReShadeChanging contrast, colour balance, sharpening and atmospheric appearancePC only; it adds no geometry or better source imagery and can complicate HDR or VR

Do not assume every MSFS 2020 graphics mod will look or work correctly in MSFS 2024. The newer simulator handles vegetation, lighting and streamed content differently, while older airport exclusions, materials and terraforming can produce visual faults even when a package loads.

Established seasonal options include REX AccuSeason and Bijan’s vegetation packages, but the right choice is the release that explicitly supports your simulator. A global package with uncertain compatibility is a worse investment than a well-maintained regional add-on.

Which graphics mod gives the biggest visual improvement?

Regional scenery gives the largest improvement when it replaces a place you know with better terrain, buildings and landmarks.

Start with the airports and areas you fly repeatedly rather than filling the Community folder with worldwide packages. Our comparison of worthwhile MSFS scenery upgrades explains when airports, cities, terrain or landmark packs provide the best return.

The free Honolulu and surrounding-area photogrammetry package is a good example of how a focused regional mod can transform VFR flying. Do not combine it with another package editing the same terrain unless their documentation confirms compatibility.

Are ReShade and map-replacement mods worth using?

ReShade is useful for a specific visual style, but it should not be the first graphics upgrade installed.

It alters the finished image rather than improving models, textures or terrain data. Heavy sharpening can create halos around cockpit text, ambient-occlusion shaders can darken panels unnaturally, and depth effects may behave poorly with menus, glass cockpits, HDR or VR.

Before adding post-processing, configure anti-aliasing, Texture Resolution, Terrain Level of Detail, Objects Level of Detail, clouds and shadows using our optimised MSFS graphics settings. Incorrect simulator settings cannot be repaired by a colour filter.

Map-replacement tools are harder to recommend for regular flying. They redirect imagery requests to another map source, so service changes can cause blank tiles, colour seams or broken caching, and there may be licensing or terms-of-use concerns. Native online scenery plus selected local scenery packages is more dependable.

How do graphics mods affect MSFS performance?

Graphics mods can reduce frame rate, but the bottleneck depends on what the package adds.

  • Detailed airports can increase VRAM use through large textures and raise CPU load through extra objects, lighting and animated elements.
  • Photogrammetry packages increase storage use and loading time; native streamed photogrammetry also depends on a stable connection and an effective rolling cache.
  • VFR object packs tend to affect the main thread in dense areas because the simulator must place and draw many additional models.
  • Seasonal textures are usually lighter than detailed scenery, but very high-resolution replacements can cause texture swapping when VRAM is exhausted.
  • ReShade effects consume GPU time. Colour adjustment is relatively light, while depth of field, ambient occlusion and multiple sharpening passes cost more.

A mistake we see constantly is installing a graphics mod to fix poor performance or blurry terrain. Mods normally add workload; lower-than-expected detail should first be checked against graphics settings, online data options, rolling-cache behaviour and available VRAM.

How should graphics mods be installed without conflicts?

The safe method is to add one graphics package at a time and test it before installing the next.

  1. Confirm the target simulator. Look for explicit MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 support, including any notes about World Updates or required libraries.
  2. Check the package scope. Record the airport ICAO code or geographical area so that two add-ons do not alter the same location.
  3. Install the package cleanly. Follow our PC mod-installation walkthrough for locating and using the Community folder. After extraction, manifest.json should normally sit directly inside the package folder; a duplicated outer folder is a common reason a mod does not appear.
  4. Run a repeatable test. Use the same airport, aircraft, weather and time of day, then inspect textures, terrain, objects and frame pacing.
  5. Remove superseded packages. Recheck scenery after simulator, World or City Updates because default content may have gained the same airport or landmark.

Common graphics-mod failure modes

  • Pink or chequered textures: the package usually has missing or incompatible materials. Update or remove it rather than changing anti-aliasing settings.
  • Double buildings or flickering ground: two scenery packages overlap. Disable one, including any older freeware version of the same airport.
  • Terrain spikes or sunken runways: an outdated terraforming or exclusion file is overriding newer scenery.
  • Blank or stale aerial imagery: remove any imagery replacement tool, restart the simulator and recreate the rolling cache if the old tiles persist.
  • Crashes or very long loading: empty the Community folder, then restore packages in batches. Moving half out at a time quickly isolates the faulty add-on.

Console limits for Xbox and PlayStation

Loose graphics mods and ReShade are PC features because consoles do not expose a Community folder.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro can use compatible scenery sold or distributed through the in-simulator Marketplace. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released on PlayStation. Always verify that a Marketplace product supports the exact console and simulator edition before obtaining it.
