Learn which Xbox flight simulator controls work with MSFS, including gamepads, keyboards, HOTAS, yokes, throttles and rudder pedals.
On Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Flight Simulator can use the standard Xbox controller, a USB keyboard and mouse, and selected Xbox-compatible joysticks, HOTAS units, yokes, throttle quadrants and rudder pedals. PC-only USB flight controls normally will not work, even when their connector fits the console.
This applies to locally installed editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 on Xbox Series X|S. Other Xbox flying games maintain their own, often narrower, peripheral support lists.
Which Xbox flight simulator controls are supported?
Microsoft Flight Simulator supports several control types on Xbox, but specialist hardware must be made for Xbox and recognised by the simulator.

Which Xbox control setup should you choose?
Choose according to the aircraft you fly, the space available and how much direct control you want.
- Xbox controller only: sufficient for learning the simulator, casual flying and playing from a sofa.
- Controller, keyboard and mouse: the most practical low-cost arrangement because the controller flies the aircraft while the mouse handles cockpit switches.
- Joystick or HOTAS: best when you want smoother control without giving up much desk space. A HOTAS adds a separate throttle and more buttons.
- Yoke and throttle quadrant: a better physical match for many light aircraft and airliners, although it requires more space and secure mounting.
- Rudder pedals: useful with either a joystick or yoke, especially for crosswinds, taildraggers and helicopters. They are an addition rather than a required first purchase.
Adding more hardware does not disable the Xbox controller. Many simmers keep it active for cameras or menu control, but duplicate flight-axis assignments should be removed.
Do PC flight controls work on Xbox?
Most PC-only flight controls do not work on Xbox because USB describes the connection, not console driver compatibility.
Look for explicit support for Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One on the exact product variant. A product described only as Windows, PC, DirectInput or USB compatible should be treated as unsupported. Similar-looking PC and Xbox editions of the same control can contain different electronics.
Rudder pedals, throttle modules and add-on panels need extra care. Some are compatible only when plugged into a matching Xbox yoke or HOTAS base through a proprietary socket; connecting them directly to the console will not work. Can you use a keyboard and mouse with an Xbox controller?
Yes, Microsoft Flight Simulator can use a keyboard, mouse and Xbox controller at the same time.
This is often easier than trying to place every simulator command on a gamepad. Use the controller or flight hardware for the primary axes, the mouse for cockpit interaction and the keyboard for less frequent commands. Why is my flight control not recognised on Xbox?
An unrecognised control is usually the wrong platform variant, an incorrect connection path or a simulator session that did not detect the device.
- Check how the simulator is running. Specialist USB flight hardware is intended for a locally installed Xbox Series X|S version. Cloud gaming does not generally pass HOTAS, yoke and pedal inputs through to the simulator.
- Verify the exact model. Confirm that the specific product or stock-keeping variant states Xbox compatibility, not merely PC compatibility.
- Connect accessories correctly. Pedals and throttles may need to plug into their matching yoke or HOTAS base rather than a console USB port.
- Reconnect before launching. Attach and power the controls first. If they remain absent, fully quit and relaunch the simulator instead of resuming the previous session.
- Select each device separately. In the control settings, check the controller, keyboard, joystick, throttle and pedals individually. Each device has its own profile and assignments.
- Remove duplicate axes. Two devices assigned to pitch, roll, throttle or rudder can fight each other and look like a hardware fault.
- Check firmware and calibration. Use the device manufacturer's supported updater where available, then test axis travel, dead zones and button responses in the simulator.
If an axis moves without input, add a small dead zone and check for duplicate bindings. If it moves in the settings screen but not in the aircraft, the selected profile or an assistance option is the likely cause.
