What are the best VR add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best Microsoft Flight Simulator VR add-ons for charts, kneeboards, GA navigation and FPS, with MSFS 2020/2024 compatibility advice.

The best VR add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator are Navigraph Charts for in-headset charts, Sky4Sim NG or OpenKneeboard for maps and checklists, PMS50 GTN750 for GA navigation, and a conservative AutoFPS or DynamicLOD utility for performance. Pick tools that keep you inside the headset; add complex aircraft and scenery only after frame times are stable.

Which VR add-on should you choose?

The right VR add-on is the one that removes a specific reason to lift the headset or reach for another screen.

NeedBest choiceWhy it works in VRMain caveat
IFR charts and proceduresNavigraph Charts in-game panelPlaces airport charts, approach plates and route information in a movable simulator window.Requires a Navigraph subscription, and text clarity depends on headset resolution and render scale.
Moving map and general kneeboardSky4Sim NGCombines mapping, flight information and documents without relying on a physical tablet.Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024's built-in EFB may already cover some basic functions.
Personal PDFs and checklistsOpenKneeboardDisplays checklists, charts and reference pages as an OpenXR overlay. It is an external Windows utility rather than a normal Community-folder package, so headset and runtime compatibility matter.
GA touchscreen navigationPMS50 GTN750Provides a large, readable navigation interface inside supported aircraft and can reduce fiddling with smaller cockpit controls.Features differ by licence, and each aircraft needs a compatible integration.
CPU-limited performanceAutoFPS or DynamicLODAdjusts terrain or object detail to protect a chosen performance target.Use only one such utility and install the edition made for MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024.

For IFR flying, we would start with Navigraph. VFR pilots who carry their own checklists may get more value from OpenKneeboard, while Sky4Sim NG suits those wanting an all-in-one panel. PMS50 GTN750 is a specialist choice for compatible GA aircraft rather than a universal VR tool.

Do performance add-ons really improve MSFS VR?

Performance utilities help only when the simulator is limited by terrain detail, objects or the main thread; they cannot fix a headset running at an unrealistic render resolution.

AutoFPS and DynamicLOD can reduce sudden frame-time spikes around dense airports, but aggressive settings cause visible terrain changes and distracting object pop-in. Set conservative minimum detail levels, test over the same airport and weather conditions, and never run two automatic LOD tools together.

A common mistake is installing OpenXR Toolkit because an older tuning guide recommends it. Development of that toolkit ended, so it should not be the foundation of a fresh MSFS 2024 setup. Existing MSFS 2020 configurations may still work on supported OpenXR stacks, but runtime updates can break overlays or menu access.

Which aircraft and scenery add-ons are best in VR?

The best VR aircraft have readable displays, predictable mouse interaction and enough performance headroom to maintain stable frame times.

Simple GA aircraft are usually the safest starting point. Detailed airliners provide impressive cockpit scale, but several glass displays, complex systems and large airport scenery can combine into a heavy CPU and GPU load. The free FlyByWire A380 package is a strong systems-rich option, though it is not the aircraft we would use to establish a VR performance baseline.

Scenery does not need a special VR edition. Good VFR landmarks and accurate airports improve visual navigation, while oversized texture packs and dense city scenery can introduce stutters that are much less comfortable in a headset. Our selections of freeware suited to VR flying and recommended MSFS scenery packages cover those content choices separately.

Will MSFS 2020 VR add-ons work in MSFS 2024?

Some MSFS 2020 panels and scenery packages work in MSFS 2024, but compatibility should never be assumed for utilities, avionics or aircraft modifications.

  • Community packages: use the release explicitly marked for your simulator and do not copy the entire MSFS 2020 Community folder into MSFS 2024.
  • External utilities: AutoFPS, DynamicLOD and OpenXR overlays may require a separate executable or configuration for each simulator.
  • Aircraft integrations: a GTN750 package can load correctly while its aircraft-specific cockpit integration remains incompatible.
  • Console versions: external Windows utilities and Community-folder installations are unavailable. Xbox does not support MSFS VR. PSVR2 support for MSFS 2024 is tied to a free 2026 update, with add-on access governed by the console ecosystem.

If the headset itself is not entering VR reliably, fix that before adding panels or overlays by following our MSFS VR and OpenXR setup process.

Why does a VR panel not appear or accept clicks?

Missing or unresponsive VR panels usually come from an incorrectly installed package, an incompatible simulator build or an interaction problem rather than a graphics setting.

  1. Confirm normal VR works first. Load a default aircraft at a modest airport with third-party packages temporarily removed.
  2. Check the package structure. A Community add-on should not be buried inside an extra wrapper folder; its package folder normally contains files such as manifest.json.
  3. Remove old copies. Duplicate panel or avionics versions can conflict even when their folder names differ.
  4. Restart the simulator. Toolbar panels and aircraft integrations are not reliably added while the simulator is already running.
  5. Test with a mouse. Many panels accept mouse input but offer incomplete tracked-controller support. Bring the window closer, enlarge it and confirm it has focus before diagnosing a controller fault.
  6. Add one utility at a time. If performance collapses or the simulator crashes, remove the latest addition and test again before changing unrelated VR settings.
