What are the best camera add-ons for MSFS 2020?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best camera add-ons for MSFS 2020, including ChasePlane, FSRealistic, replay tools, freeware choices and Xbox limitations.

For MSFS 2020, ChasePlane is the strongest all-round camera add-on for saved views and cinematic movement; FSRealistic is best for cockpit motion and touchdown effects. FlightControlReplay suits filming and replay analysis, while Sky Dolly is the leading free replay companion. Xbox users are largely limited to the simulator’s built-in cameras.

The right camera utility depends on whether you need reusable cockpit views, physical head movement or the ability to replay a completed flight. These products address different jobs rather than competing directly.

OptionBest forWhy choose itMain limitation
ChasePlaneOverall camera controlAircraft-specific views, convenient switching, smooth transitions and cinematic movementPayware and not a flight recorder
FSRealistic ProCockpit immersionHead movement, vibration, turbulence and touchdown effects linked to aircraft behaviourNot a view or camera-preset manager
FlightControlReplayFilming and landing reviewRecords flights for repeatable playback while views and camera angles are changedComplex aircraft systems may not reproduce perfectly
Sky DollyFree replayFree recording and playback with the freedom to operate the simulator’s cameras during replayLess suitable than a dedicated camera manager for everyday cockpit views
Built-in Showcase/Drone CameraFree exterior shotsNo installation, broad movement and useful focus controlsAwkward bindings and no complete replay workflow

Which MSFS camera add-on should you choose?

Choose ChasePlane for regular flying, FSRealistic for movement effects and a replay utility when the finished footage matters more than live camera control.

  • Airliner cockpit views: ChasePlane is the best fit when you regularly switch between the pilot’s seat, overhead panel, pedestal, instruments and wing views.
  • More physical cockpit movement: FSRealistic adds the sense of acceleration, runway vibration and touchdown impact. Keep its effects restrained for instrument flying; excessive movement makes switches and displays harder to use.
  • Landing analysis or flight videos: FlightControlReplay provides the fuller payware workflow. Sky Dolly is the sensible free choice when straightforward recording and replay are enough.
  • No-cost camera control: Start with the Showcase/Drone Camera and MSFS custom cockpit views before installing anything.

FSRealistic complements ChasePlane rather than replacing it. We cover its wider role alongside other immersion utilities in our comparison of MSFS realism tools.

Are the built-in MSFS 2020 cameras good enough?

Yes—the stock cameras are enough for ordinary cockpit views, screenshots and free-roaming exterior shots. The Showcase/Drone Camera can move independently around the aircraft, while custom cockpit cameras provide reusable instrument and seating positions.

Before buying an add-on, learn the Drone Camera’s movement, focus, follow and speed controls through our practical walkthrough of the built-in free camera. Our downloadable keyboard and camera-command reference is also useful when default bindings have been forgotten or overwritten.

A dedicated add-on becomes worthwhile when you fly several aircraft, want views managed as profiles, need smoother transitions or repeatedly produce video. The stock camera system can achieve excellent angles, but its modes and overlapping control assignments take time to master.

Can camera and replay add-ons be combined?

Yes, but each utility should have a separate role: one manages views, one adds movement and one records the flight. ChasePlane, lightly configured FSRealistic effects and either FlightControlReplay or Sky Dolly make a practical combination.

A replay tool records simulator variables rather than a literal video of the flight. This lets you change the camera during playback, but custom avionics, animations, lights or control surfaces may not always return to precisely the recorded state. Test a short segment with the intended aircraft before recording a long production; our explanation of building a reliable MSFS replay workflow covers that process in more detail.

How do you prevent camera conflicts?

Most erratic movement comes from duplicated controls or two utilities trying to command the same camera effect.

  1. Establish a stock baseline. Confirm that cockpit, external and Showcase cameras work before enabling third-party software.
  2. Check duplicate bindings. In Controls Options, search by the joystick button, hat switch or axis being used and remove unwanted camera assignments from the active controller profile.
  3. Give each movement effect one owner. Do not stack MSFS camera shake, head-tracking movement and add-on vibration at full strength. If the view jitters or drifts, disable the effects one at a time.
  4. Create profiles per aircraft. A camera position that suits an airliner may sit inside a seat, bulkhead or canopy in another cockpit.
  5. Test replay fidelity early. Record gear, flap and light changes in a short circuit before relying on any replay utility for a longer flight.

Another mistake is installing the wrong edition of a familiar product. An older FSX or Prepar3D camera utility does not automatically work with Microsoft Flight Simulator, and support for MSFS 2024 does not by itself confirm MSFS 2020 compatibility. Check the exact simulator and platform named for the edition or licence.

Do MSFS 2020 camera add-ons work on Xbox?

Most advanced MSFS 2020 camera and replay utilities do not work on Xbox Series X|S because they depend on a separate Windows application, SimConnect or files outside the console’s managed environment. Xbox cannot run those desktop companions or accept ordinary Community-folder packages.

On Xbox, use the built-in Cockpit, External and Showcase/Drone cameras unless a Marketplace product explicitly lists Xbox compatibility. Features can differ from a similarly named PC edition, so do not assume that desktop replay, profile management or external controls are included. MSFS 2020 was never released on PlayStation.
