Compare the best freeware VR mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator, with aircraft, VFR scenery, compatibility checks and fixes for stutters.
The best freeware VR add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator are lightweight aircraft with complete 3D cockpits, VFR landmark packages such as We Love VFR, and carefully chosen local airports. Start with the Van’s RV-7/RV-7A or Mykrodian MX1, then add scenery selectively; high-resolution global packs often cost more VR performance than they add.
Which freeware VR add-ons are the best?
For most PC VR pilots, the strongest choices improve cockpit presence or visual navigation without imposing a large processing penalty.
| Add-on | Best use | Why it works well in VR | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Van’s RV-7/RV-7A freeware pack | VFR touring and aerobatics | It has a fully modelled virtual cockpit, good outward visibility and the performance of a relatively simple GA aircraft. | Confirm that the package version matches your edition of the simulator. |
| Mykrodian MX1 | Low-and-slow sightseeing | The open view, small cockpit and modest systems load suit immersive VR flying. It is among the VR-compatible aircraft covered in our wider freeware aircraft round-up. | An ultralight is excellent for scenery viewing but not for practising conventional airliner procedures. |
| FlyByWire A32NX for MSFS 2020 | Airliner operations | Its detailed 3D flight deck and functional systems provide much more cockpit depth than a simple livery or exterior model. | It is substantially heavier than a GA aircraft, and dense controls are often easier to operate with a mouse than VR controllers. For MSFS 2024, use only a build explicitly marked compatible. |
| We Love VFR regional object packs | Visual navigation | Masts, chimneys and other vertical objects give useful scale and depth cues when flying below the clouds. | Object density can add CPU load. Avoid overlapping landmark packages and install only the regions you use. |
| One well-optimised freeware airport | Local circuits and regular routes | Recognisable buildings, aprons and runway surroundings make arrival and ground movement much more convincing in a headset. | Large terminals, animated objects and oversized textures can cause stutters. Start with one of our curated freeware airport choices, not a folder full of airports loaded at once. |
AI traffic, pushback tools and ship traffic can also add life, but we would install them after the aircraft and scenery are running smoothly. VR exposes main-thread stutters sharply, so an add-on that looks excellent on a monitor may not make the best headset choice.
Are any Microsoft Flight Simulator mods truly VR-only?
Very few add-ons are exclusively for VR because Microsoft Flight Simulator supplies the VR renderer and interaction system; ordinary aircraft and scenery packages are displayed through it.
“VR compatible” should mean more than a visible exterior model. Look for a complete 3D virtual cockpit, readable instruments, correct viewpoint placement and controls that can be operated with your preferred combination of mouse, hardware and VR controllers. Controller support varies even when every cockpit switch works with a mouse.
Headset software, OpenXR runtimes and graphics-driver tools are not aircraft or scenery mods. Avoid installing runtime layers or shader injectors merely because they promise extra sharpness: they can introduce artefacts, prevent VR from starting or break after a simulator, runtime or driver change. Use one only to solve a specific, understood problem.
Do freeware VR mods work in MSFS 2024 and on consoles?
PC Community-folder add-ons may work in both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, but compatibility is not automatic and console users cannot sideload these packages.
- MSFS 2020 on PC: This has a mature freeware catalogue. Some enhancement mods require a particular default aircraft or simulator edition, so check the dependency before installing.
- MSFS 2024 on PC: Use a native 2024 release where one exists. A 2020 package may load but still have broken avionics, interaction points, sounds or flight-model behaviour.
- Xbox Series X|S: Arbitrary PC Community-folder mods cannot be installed. Console users are limited to content supplied through the simulator’s supported distribution system.
- PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro: MSFS 2024 is available, with PSVR2 support arriving through a free update in 2026. That support does not make downloadable PC Community packages installable on PlayStation. MSFS 2020 was never released for PlayStation.
Never keep separate 2020 and 2024 editions of the same package active together. Duplicate models, liveries or libraries are a common cause of unusually long loading screens and missing objects.
How should I install and troubleshoot VR add-ons?
Install VR-friendly add-ons one at a time and test them on a repeatable flight before building a larger collection.
- Check the required simulator. Confirm whether the download targets MSFS 2020, MSFS 2024 or both, and note any required base aircraft or object library.
- Use the supplied installer when required. Otherwise extract the package into the active
Communityfolder. The package directory should normally containmanifest.jsonandlayout.json; an extra nested directory can stop the simulator finding it. - Create a lean VR profile. We recommend organising Community packages with MSFS Addons Linker so only the aircraft, airport and regional scenery needed for that session are active.
- Record a clean baseline. Load the same aircraft, airport, weather and time without add-ons, then repeat the test after enabling one package.
- Judge frame-time consistency. Smooth head movement matters more in VR than a high average frame rate interrupted by spikes.
Performance diagnosis by symptom
- Stutters appear near the ground: Disable the detailed airport, photogrammetry replacement, landmark objects and AI traffic before blaming the aircraft.
- The exterior is smooth but the cockpit is not: Glass displays and aircraft systems are probably the heavier load. Try a simpler GA aircraft and reduce the glass-cockpit refresh setting where the simulator provides one.
- The simulator hangs or closes while loading: Remove the latest package, check for duplicate versions and verify all required libraries. If necessary, test with an empty Community folder and restore packages in small groups.
- Switches work with the mouse but not VR controllers: This is usually an interaction or controller-binding limitation, not a failed installation. Keep the mouse available or assign the essential controls to a yoke, throttle or button box.
- Cockpit labels look blurred: First check headset resolution, render scaling and anti-aliasing. A scenery or aircraft mod cannot compensate for an undersampled VR image.
