Can’t click cockpit controls in a flight simulator? Fix mouse capture, focus, interaction modes, bindings, aircraft power and add-on faults.
You usually can’t click cockpit controls in a flight simulator because the mouse is captured by the camera, the simulator has lost window focus, the wrong interaction mode or mouse profile is active, or the aircraft lacks electrical power. Restore focus, exit freelook, test a default aircraft, then check bindings, power and add-ons.
The fastest diagnosis is to determine whether every aircraft is affected. If a ready-to-fly default aircraft works normally, the mouse and simulator are probably fine; the fault belongs to the original aircraft, its systems or an add-on.
What does the cockpit-control symptom tell you?
The cursor’s behaviour usually identifies which part of the input chain has failed.

How do I make cockpit controls clickable again?
Work through these checks in order, because resetting or reinstalling the simulator should be the last resort.
- Restore focus to the main simulator window. Close open toolbar panels, controller menus and text-entry boxes, then click inside the cockpit view. On PC, switch to another application and back if the simulator appears active but ignores the pointer.

- Reset the mouse interaction profile. Load the simulator’s default mouse profile and remove duplicated assignments for primary interaction, freelook and camera movement. Do not erase joystick or throttle profiles unless testing proves they are involved.
- Check the interaction mode. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 provide different cockpit interaction styles, commonly called Legacy and Lock. They use different visual feedback and gestures. Temporarily try the other mode; if that works, reset the original profile rather than leaving unrelated bindings changed. - Use the control’s expected gesture. A push-button may need a click, but a rotary knob may require the mouse wheel or a drag. Levers often need click-and-drag movement, and covered switches require the guard to be opened first. Inner and outer knob sections can have separate, small clickspots.
- Supply aircraft power. In a cold-and-dark cockpit, turn on the battery and connect an appropriate power source before testing electronic displays, lighting, motorised switches or avionics. Battery power alone may not energise every electrical bus. If mechanically modelled controls also refuse to move, the problem is more likely input-related.
- Test a stock aircraft in a ready-to-fly state. Use a default aircraft without a custom livery or systems modification. A mistake we see constantly is reinstalling the whole simulator before making this simple comparison.
- Isolate hardware and add-ons. Disconnect gamepads, touch controllers and button boxes one at a time; a duplicated or continuously active camera command can keep taking control of the pointer. Temporarily remove the suspect aircraft or cockpit modification, then restart the simulator so its scripts and input profiles reload cleanly.
Why does a switch highlight but not move?
A highlight proves the pointer has reached a clickspot, but it does not prove that a single left-click is the required action.
- Turn a knob: try the mouse wheel, then click-and-drag if the wheel has no effect.
- Move a lever: hold the interaction button while dragging through the lever’s permitted range.
- Operate a guarded switch: open the cover before moving the switch underneath it.
- Use a powered control: establish the required hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical supply.
- Check both halves of a knob: concentric knobs commonly have separate inner and outer click areas.
X-Plane aircraft can use custom manipulators that change the cursor shape and expect a specific drag direction. Older FSX and Prepar3D aircraft may provide a working control only on a 2D pop-up panel, even when the equivalent virtual-cockpit object is visible.
Why are controls unclickable in only one aircraft?
If other default aircraft work, the affected aircraft is either not modelling those controls or its systems code has failed to load.
First load it in a ready-to-fly state. If the controls then work, the original cold-and-dark setup lacked power or a required system condition. If they remain dead, remove aircraft-specific modifications, check that all required components are installed together, and avoid mixing files from different releases of the same add-on.
Complex aircraft rely on scripts rather than basic simulator animations, so one failed component can disable an entire panel while the rest of the cockpit still works. Some visible controls are intentionally decorative. Circuit breakers, maintenance panels, duplicated co-pilot controls and minor lighting knobs are often not simulated, particularly in older or less detailed aircraft. If a control never highlights, has no tooltip and lacks a documented binding, it may simply have no functional clickspot.
