Learn how to start, steer and stop pushback in any flight simulator, with MSFS, FSX and add-on controls plus fixes when the tug will not move.
To control pushback in a flight simulator, request or start the tug, wait for it to connect, release the parking brake when instructed, choose the turn direction, then stop the tug and reset the brake. The exact command depends on the simulator: MSFS uses ground services, while FSX uses keyboard commands.
How do you perform a controlled pushback?
A safe pushback follows the same basic sequence in most flight simulators, even when the controls differ.
- Prepare the aircraft. Retract the jetway, close doors and confirm that the area behind the aircraft is clear. Set the parking brake before requesting the tug; remove wheel chocks when the aircraft or ground-service system requires it.
- Request or start pushback. Use the simulator's ground-services menu, keyboard command, aircraft tablet or pushback add-on. Wait until the tug has connected before releasing anything.
- Release the parking brake. Do this only when the ground crew or interface instructs you. Leave the throttles at idle and keep your feet off the toe brakes.
- Command the turn. Select left, right or straight pushback using the active system. Check whether left and right describe the movement of the tail, the nose or the tug; this convention varies between simulators and add-ons.
- Stop and disconnect. Give the stop command slightly before reaching the desired position. Once stationary, set the parking brake, allow the tug to disconnect and wait until it is clear before taxiing.
Do not operate two pushback systems together. A common mistake we see is starting the simulator's built-in tug and then activating an aircraft tablet or add-on, leaving the tug stuck or producing conflicting steering commands.
Which pushback controls does each simulator use?
Pushback controls range from a single keyboard shortcut to a planned tug route entered through an aircraft or add-on panel.

Should I use rudder, brakes or throttle during pushback?
Normally, no: the tug should move and steer the aircraft while the throttles remain at idle and the brakes stay released. Rudder pedals or a joystick steer pushback only when the selected simulator or add-on explicitly maps those axes to the tug.
Do not use forward thrust to help a slow tug or reverse thrust to imitate pushback. Apart from being unrealistic at most stands, thrust can cause the aircraft to surge, disconnect the tug or strike nearby equipment. If the aircraft moves too quickly, stop the pushback service rather than riding the brakes.
Why is pushback not working?
Pushback usually fails because the aircraft is not recognised at a suitable stand, a brake or chock is still active, or two ground-service systems are competing for control.
- The tug never appears: confirm that the aircraft is parked close enough to a recognised gate or stand. Custom scenery can place service points incorrectly.
- The tug connects but will not move: release the parking brake when instructed and check for wheel chocks or a noisy brake-axis binding.
- The aircraft moves but will not turn: enter the direction command earlier, verify the assigned keys and establish whether the command refers to tail or nose direction.
- Pushback stops immediately: look for duplicate brake assignments, controller inputs or an aircraft system that has reapplied the parking brake.
- The tug becomes trapped or detached: stop the service, set the brake and reset or dismiss the tug. Do not use engine power to drag it clear.

How far should you push the aircraft back?
Push only far enough to place the aircraft on the taxi-lane centreline with room to begin the first turn. Keep the wings, tail and engines clear of buildings, vehicles and adjacent stands; the cockpit may look correctly positioned while the tail is still too close to the terminal.
At a marked gate, follow the stand geometry or the planned tug route. Where scenery markings are poor, use an external view briefly to check clearance, then return to the cockpit before taxiing.
