DCS World vs Ace Combat 7: what is the difference?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare DCS World vs Ace Combat 7 on realism, aircraft, controls, VR, campaigns and cost, then choose the combat flying game that suits you.

DCS World is a PC combat-flight simulator built around realistic aircraft systems, weapons and procedures; Ace Combat 7 is a fast, cinematic action game designed for immediate controller play. Choose DCS for cockpit study and authentic tactics. Choose Ace Combat 7 for a structured story campaign, spectacle and short, accessible missions.

They both feature modern military aircraft, missile combat and single-player missions, but the resemblance largely ends there. DCS World asks you to operate an aircraft; Ace Combat 7 asks you to survive and win an action set piece.

The central split is simulation depth versus accessible aerial action.

DCS realism varies by module. Full-fidelity aircraft reproduce far more cockpit systems than the simplified Flaming Cliffs range, while restricted real-world information means some military systems must be approximated. Our overview of the free DCS platform and its included content explains what you receive before purchasing an aircraft.

Which game should you choose?

Choose DCS World if learning one aircraft in depth sounds more rewarding than unlocking a large collection quickly; choose Ace Combat 7 if you want a polished campaign that gets to the fighting within minutes.

  • Choose DCS World for clickable cockpits, realistic weapons, air-to-air refuelling, carrier operations, navigation, procedure-based flying and organised co-operative missions.
  • Choose Ace Combat 7 for controller play, dramatic set pieces, fictional superweapons, a clear progression system and missions that do not require studying an aircraft manual.
  • Start with free DCS content if you are uncertain. Its core aircraft let you test the flight model, control setup and PC performance before buying modules.

Avoid these mismatched expectations

Most disappointing purchases come from expecting one title to behave like the other. DCS does offer air starts, instant-action missions and simplified aircraft, so it does not force a cold start every time. It still will not provide Ace Combat's pace, ammunition levels or cinematic campaign structure.

Conversely, Ace Combat 7 uses authentic-looking aircraft but does not simulate their cockpits or weapon employment in DCS detail. Its damage percentage, rapid missile replenishment and high-G manoeuvres are deliberate game mechanics, not realistic representations.

Before buying DCS modules, settle on a distribution channel and check each campaign's aircraft, terrain and asset requirements. Our explanation of how DCS module ownership differs between its PC distribution options covers a common and potentially costly mistake.

Is DCS World much harder than Ace Combat 7?

Yes—DCS World has a substantially steeper learning curve because the aircraft, sensors and weapons behave differently from one module to another.

In a full-fidelity DCS aircraft, launching a radar-guided missile may require configuring the radar, selecting an operating mode, interpreting contacts, confirming identity and staying within launch parameters. Ace Combat 7 reduces that chain to selecting a target, obtaining a lock and firing, leaving the player to concentrate on positioning and incoming threats.

DCS difficulty is adjustable. Hot starts, labels, unlimited fuel, simplified modules and training missions can reduce the workload while you learn. Our beginner setup and first-flight walkthrough covers the practical path from installation to a manageable first sortie.

Ace Combat 7 can still be demanding on higher difficulty settings. Its challenge comes from mission timers, dense enemy formations, scripted hazards and score requirements rather than cockpit operation.

Do you need a HOTAS or VR for either game?

No, but a gamepad suits Ace Combat 7 far better, while a joystick or HOTAS makes DCS World easier to control precisely.

DCS can be played with a gamepad by using modifiers and keeping less-used commands on the keyboard. A twist-grip joystick can substitute for rudder pedals, although pedals become more valuable in helicopters, warbirds and ground handling. A mistake we see constantly is leaving pitch, roll or throttle assigned to several connected devices; clear duplicate axis bindings before judging an aircraft's handling.

Ace Combat 7's Standard control mode adds turning assistance, while Expert controls provide direct pitch and roll input. Expert is the better option for players accustomed to flight sims, but the underlying flight model remains arcade-focused. HOTAS compatibility is narrower and platform-dependent, so do not assume every generic controller will work natively.

VR is another major distinction. DCS places its normal cockpit, missions and multiplayer experience in VR, at the cost of demanding PC performance. Ace Combat 7's VR component consists of separate PlayStation VR missions rather than a VR version of its main campaign.

Can Ace Combat 7 skills transfer to DCS World?

Only the broadest combat concepts transfer: watching your energy, leading a turning target, using countermeasures and avoiding predictable flight paths.

Ace Combat habits such as carrying dozens of missiles, pulling maximum turns continuously or relying on an instant all-aspect lock can cause trouble in DCS. Realistic engagements require fuel and weapon planning, careful identification, control of closure rate and an understanding of each missile's engagement envelope.

That does not make one game inherently better. DCS World rewards study, precision and repeated practice; Ace Combat 7 rewards fast reactions, mission awareness and aggressive flying within a deliberately cinematic rule set.
