Learn how to disable controller vibration in Microsoft Flight Simulator, disconnect a gamepad safely, and fix rumble, ghost inputs and duplicate bindings.
To stop controller vibration in Microsoft Flight Simulator, open Settings or Options, find Controller Vibration in the assistance or controller settings, switch it off, then apply and save. To disconnect the controller, power it off or unplug it. If you still need it for menus, select an empty control profile instead.
How do I turn off controller vibration in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
The in-simulator switch is the best choice because it disables rumble for Microsoft Flight Simulator without changing other games.
- Open Settings or Options. You can normally do this from the main menu or the pause menu.
- Find Controller Vibration. In MSFS 2020, check Assistance Options, particularly the piloting-related settings. MSFS 2024 and different console layouts may place it among the controller options instead.
- Set vibration to Off. Use Apply and Save rather than simply backing out of the menu.
- Test it on the ground. Taxi over a rough surface or advance the power briefly, as normal level flight may not produce noticeable rumble.
Changing a control preset does not necessarily disable vibration. Bindings determine what the buttons and axes operate; the vibration option controls the feedback motors separately.
What if there is no Controller Vibration switch?
If your MSFS edition or controller does not expose an in-game switch, disable vibration through the platform or the device's configuration software.
| Platform | Fallback method | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Use the supported controller configuration software. Steam installations may also provide a per-game rumble setting. | Windows has no single vibration switch that works with every gamepad. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Open the console's Settings, then Accessibility, Controller and Vibration settings. | This can affect vibration outside MSFS as well. |
| PS5 or PS5 Pro | Under Settings, Accessories and Controller (General), set Vibration Intensity to Off. Disable Trigger Effect Intensity separately if required. | This is a system-level change. The PlayStation option applies to MSFS 2024; MSFS 2020 was not released on PlayStation. |
A specialist force-feedback yoke, wheel or other device may ignore the ordinary gamepad vibration setting. Its forces are usually controlled by the device driver, configuration utility or an add-on rather than MSFS's rumble option.
How do I disconnect or disable a controller?
Microsoft Flight Simulator has no universal in-game Disconnect button, so the right method depends on whether you want the controller powered off or merely prevented from controlling the aircraft.
- Wired controller: Pause the flight and unplug its USB cable. Reconnect it before launching MSFS if the simulator fails to add it properly during a flight.
- Wireless Xbox controller: Hold the Xbox button until the controller powers down. On PC, removing its Bluetooth pairing prevents automatic reconnection.
- DualSense controller: Open the PS5 Control Centre, select Accessories, choose the controller and turn it off.
- Connected but inactive: Select or create a controller profile with its flight axes and buttons unassigned. This is often preferable when the gamepad is still needed for menus alongside a joystick or HOTAS.
If an old or conflicting profile is the problem, follow our method to clear or reset that controller's bindings. On a console, powering off the only active gamepad may produce a reconnect-controller message, so an empty profile is usually the cleaner solution.
Why does the controller still vibrate or appear connected?
Persistent vibration usually means the setting was not saved, another feedback layer remains enabled, or MSFS is detecting a second physical or virtual controller.
- Apply the change: Return to the vibration setting, select Off, then use Apply and Save. Recheck it after changing an assistance preset.
- Disable separate feedback: DualSense trigger effects, controller-software rumble and force feedback are separate from ordinary controller vibration.
- Check every detected device: A gamepad can appear alongside a virtual controller created by remapping software. Turning off the physical pad does not remove that virtual device.
- Restart after disconnection: If the controller tile remains after unplugging it, return to the main menu or restart MSFS so the hardware list is rebuilt.
If Windows recognises the controller but MSFS does not—or the simulator still sees a device you thought was disconnected—use our steps to check how MSFS and Windows are detecting the device.
What if the aircraft still moves with the controller untouched?
Uncommanded movement is normally caused by axis drift or duplicate bindings, not vibration.
Open the controller assignments, use Search by Input if available, and move each stick or trigger deliberately to identify its mapped axis. Remove duplicate aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle assignments from any controller that should be inactive. Increase the dead zone only when an analogue axis genuinely flickers around its centre; a dead zone will not correct two devices commanding the same control.
