How do I fix a DirectX error in MSFS 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Fix DirectX errors in MSFS 2024 with driver, shader-cache, graphics, VRAM and add-on checks, plus targeted steps for D3D12 failures.

To fix a DirectX error in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, first remove GPU instability: restart Windows, install a stable graphics driver, disable overlays and overclocks, and clear the DirectX shader cache. Then reset MSFS graphics settings, test without add-ons, and lower VRAM-heavy options if the crash occurs during flight.

Fix DirectX errors in MSFS 2024 in this order

The fastest reliable method is to eliminate driver, configuration and add-on problems one at a time.

  1. Restart and update the PC. Perform a full Windows restart rather than reopening the simulator after a crash. Install pending Windows and MSFS 2024 updates before changing other settings.
  2. Install a stable graphics driver. Obtain the driver from the GPU manufacturer and use its clean-installation option if one is provided. If the DirectX crashes began immediately after a driver update, return to the previous stable driver instead of repeatedly reinstalling the new one.
  3. Remove hardware tuning. Restore the GPU, CPU and RAM to their default settings. Disable user overclocks, undervolts and automatic tuning tools; if other demanding applications are also unstable, temporarily test without an XMP or EXPO memory profile.
  4. Make MSFS use the discrete GPU. On a laptop, open Windows Settings, find the per-application graphics options and assign MSFS 2024 to the high-performance GPU. On a desktop, confirm that the monitor is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard output.
  5. Disable overlays and graphics hooks. Turn off recording overlays, performance monitoring, ReShade, frame-generation utilities and on-screen displays such as RTSS while testing. These tools can intercept the D3D12 rendering chain and produce errors that appear to come from the simulator.
  6. Clear the DirectX shader cache. Use Windows Storage or Disk Cleanup to remove DirectX Shader Cache, then restart the PC. Windows and the graphics driver will rebuild the cache; the next load may take longer.
  7. Reset the simulator's graphics configuration. A bad setting can survive driver changes, so use our safe procedure for rebuilding MSFS 2024 graphics settings. Begin with a standard preset and leave frame generation disabled for the first test.
  8. Test without add-ons. Use Safe Mode if MSFS offers it after a crash, or temporarily move everything out of the Community folder. Test a default aircraft at an ordinary default airport before restoring packages individually.
  9. Reduce graphics-memory demand. Lower texture resolution, render scaling, terrain level of detail and object level of detail. If the error appears at detailed airports or after switching aircraft, follow our VRAM reduction checks for MSFS 2024.

Change one category at a time and repeat the same flight. A common mistake we see is changing the driver, graphics preset and add-ons together; that may stop the crash, but it leaves no way to identify what caused it.

What does an MSFS 2024 DirectX error mean?

A DirectX error usually means Windows or the GPU stopped completing rendering commands; it does not automatically mean that DirectX itself is missing or damaged.

Message or failure patternMost likely area to check
D3D12 or renderer initialisation failure before the menuGPU driver, wrong graphics adapter, shader cache or unsupported graphics hardware
Graphics device, device removed or device hung errorDriver instability, overclocking, overlays, overheating or a stalled GPU
Crash at a dense airport or after a long flightVRAM pressure, demanding settings, traffic models or scenery
Crash with one aircraft or airport onlyFaulty or incompatible aircraft, livery, scenery or optional package
Crashes beginning after a driver updateDriver regression or stale shader data

If MSFS specifically cannot create its renderer at launch, use the more targeted D3D12 initialisation troubleshooting sequence. If the message instead says the graphics device encountered a problem, our graphics-device crash diagnosis covers driver timeouts, temperatures and GPU stability in more detail.

Should I reinstall DirectX or switch to DirectX 11?

No—downloading loose DLL files or installing an old DirectX runtime is not the correct repair for an MSFS 2024 D3D12 error.

DirectX 12 is part of Windows, and advice written for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 about switching to DirectX 11 is not a dependable remedy for MSFS 2024. Running dxdiag can confirm the detected GPU and driver, but seeing “DirectX 12” there does not prove that the driver, required feature support or hardware is stable.

If Windows components may be damaged, open Windows Terminal as an administrator and run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, followed by sfc /scannow. Restart afterwards, then use the game platform's repair or file-verification function. Do not delete the simulator's Packages folder as a general DirectX fix.

These driver and DirectX procedures apply to Windows PCs. Xbox Series X|S does not expose desktop driver controls, while PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro use a different graphics stack; on consoles, update the system and simulator, perform a full restart, and test without optional content.

What if it crashes with only one aircraft or airport?

A crash limited to one aircraft, livery or airport points towards that package or its memory demand rather than a broken DirectX installation.

Repeat the flight with a default aircraft and default scenery under similar weather conditions. If that works, remove the suspect package and anything that modifies it, then reinstall only that content. A complex aircraft combined with a detailed airport can also exceed available VRAM even when neither package is faulty on its own.

When is a DirectX error likely to be a hardware problem?

Suspect hardware when several 3D applications fail, the screen shows artefacts, Windows repeatedly resets the display driver, or MSFS still crashes at default clocks with clean drivers and no add-ons.

Check GPU temperature, power connections and system memory before replacing anything. If the fault occurs only in MSFS 2024, concentrate first on the simulator configuration, driver version, add-ons and VRAM use; those are far more useful clues than the word “DirectX” in the error message.
