Why is the FlyByWire A320 not working in MSFS 2020?

Adam McEnroe
In short

FlyByWire A320 not working in MSFS 2020? Fix wrong install paths, duplicate packages, missing aircraft, black screens, EFB and control conflicts.

The FlyByWire A320 usually stops working in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 because the A32NX is installed in the wrong Community folder, an old or duplicate package is conflicting, the simulator or aircraft is outdated, or the wrong A320 is selected. Confirm the symptom, then repair the installation before resetting controls.

Match the symptom to the right fix

The symptom tells you whether this is an installation, aircraft-system or control problem. FlyByWire calls its modified A320neo the A32NX; it is a separate aircraft rather than an upgrade applied to every A320 in the selection menu.

Clean-repair the A32NX installation

A clean A32NX reinstall fixes most cases where the FlyByWire A320 is missing, crashes during loading or stops working after a simulator update.

  1. Close MSFS 2020 and the FlyByWire Installer. Do not replace package files while either application is using them.
  2. Find the active Community folder. Check the simulator's active packages location rather than assuming the default Microsoft Store or Steam path. The value named InstalledPackagesPath in UserCfg.opt points to the packages directory; its Community subfolder is the one MSFS reads.
  3. Remove old FlyByWire copies. Uninstall the A32NX through the installer, then inspect the active Community folder for leftovers from manual installations. Remove duplicate Stable or Development copies and old compatibility packages, but do not delete files from the Official folder.
  4. Isolate other add-ons. Temporarily move every other Community package elsewhere, especially A32NX liveries, cockpit modifications and old avionics add-ons. MSFS Safe Mode is not a valid A32NX test because it disables Community aircraft, including the A32NX itself.
  5. Install one fresh Stable copy. Confirm that the installer is targeting MSFS 2020 and the active packages path. Stable is the best diagnostic baseline; do not keep separate branches side by side manually. Our correct A32NX installer and folder procedure covers the path and package checks in detail.
  6. Update both components. Finish any required MSFS 2020 and core-content updates, then update the A32NX in its installer. If the installer cannot write the package, check free space, folder permissions and whether security software quarantined part of the download.
  7. Run a controlled test. Start a new flight with the aircraft identified as FlyByWire or A32NX, its included livery and no saved flight. Do not select the default Asobo A320neo or another A320 variant by mistake.

If the clean aircraft works, restore other Community packages in small groups. The last group added before the fault returns contains the conflict; test its liveries first.

Can the FlyByWire A320 run on Xbox?

No. The FlyByWire A32NX package discussed here is a PC Community add-on installed with the FlyByWire Installer. MSFS 2020 on Xbox does not provide the user-accessible Community folder or Windows installer support that it requires, so reinstalling or changing Xbox control settings will not make this package appear.

Why is the A32NX missing from aircraft selection?

The A32NX is normally missing because MSFS is reading a different Community folder, the downloaded package is nested too deeply, or an aircraft-list filter is hiding it. Clear search and filtering options, then search for both FlyByWire and A32NX.

For a manually extracted package, manifest.json and layout.json should be near the top of the package folder, not inside a second identically named directory. An installer-based reinstall is safer than rearranging individual files. If it remains absent or hangs while loading, use our missing-aircraft and loading-hang checklist.

Why are the FlyByWire A320 screens black?

Black screens are expected in a cold-and-dark aircraft until electrical power is established, but they are not normal when starting on the runway in a ready state. Turn on the aircraft batteries and connect external power or start the APU, then check the individual display and EFB brightness controls.

  • Disconnect or clear any hardware binding that holds Avionics Master in the off position. A physical switch can continuously overwrite the cockpit state even though the Airbus does not use a conventional avionics-master workflow.
  • If every display stays dark with a clean installation and default livery, update the A32NX and repeat the Community-isolation test.
  • If only the tablet is missing, black or frozen, follow the focused flyPad power and installation checks rather than reinstalling MSFS.

Control and throttle problems after the aircraft loads

Once the A32NX loads correctly, unresponsive controls usually point to configuration rather than damaged aircraft files. Set MSFS 2020 to the Modern flight model, test a fresh device profile and remove duplicate pitch, roll, rudder, throttle and brake assignments across joysticks, gamepads and keyboards.

Throttle hardware with detents should be calibrated through the A32NX EFB so idle, climb and take-off positions match the physical lever. If the engines produce thrust but the aircraft remains stationary, check the parking brake, wheel chocks, pushback state and any brake axis that may be sending a constant input. The parking-brake, chock and brake-axis checks cover that specific fault.

Do I need to reinstall MSFS 2020?

Almost never. Reinstall the simulator only if default aircraft and core content also fail with the Community folder empty. If the problem affects only the FlyByWire A32NX, repairing its package, removing conflicts and resetting the relevant control profile is faster and more likely to address the actual cause.
