In Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX), the “Please insert Disc 1” error usually means Windows is opening the DVD installer, the boxed copy cannot validate its licence, or boxed and FSX: Steam Edition files have been mixed. Is FSX supposed to need Disc 1 to start?
An activated boxed copy of FSX should start without the DVD, while FSX: Steam Edition never uses a disc. Disc 1 is normally required only while installing, repairing or changing components in the boxed release.

How do I remove the FSX Disc 1 prompt?
Work through these checks in order, stopping when FSX starts normally.
- Identify when the message appears. If it appears only while installing or repairing boxed FSX, supply the original Disc 1 and continue with the installer. If it appears when starting a completed installation, close the message and check the executable being launched.
- Check the shortcut target. Right-click the FSX shortcut, open its properties and inspect the target. It should launch the installed
fsx.exe, notsetup.exe,autorun.exeor a file on the DVD drive. A typical boxed installation usesC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe, although a custom location is perfectly valid. - Repair the correct edition. For Steam Edition, open the Steam library, select FSX, open Properties, choose Installed Files and verify the installation. For boxed FSX, use its Change or Repair option in Windows Programs and Features if available; the repair process may legitimately request Disc 1. File verification can restore modified stock files, so back up deliberate changes first.
- Complete boxed-FSX activation. Run the installed
fsx.exeas administrator once and complete any activation request. FSX and the Acceleration expansion may present separate activation stages. What if FSX: Steam Edition asks for Disc 1?
FSX: Steam Edition has no Disc 1, so inserting a DVD is not the solution. Start FSX directly from the Steam library; if that works, delete and recreate the old desktop shortcut.
If the prompt remains after file verification, a boxed fsx.exe, boxed service pack or other modified executable has probably entered the Steam folder. Remove the incompatible patch or perform a clean Steam reinstall into its own library folder. A boxed product key cannot activate Steam Edition, and a Steam licence cannot repair a boxed installation.
What if Windows cannot read the original FSX DVD?
If File Explorer cannot display Disc 1, the problem is the disc or drive rather than FSX activation.
- Confirm that it is the FSX installation Disc 1, not Disc 2 or the separate Acceleration disc.
- Clean the readable surface from the centre outwards and inspect it for damage.
- Test the disc in another known-good DVD drive; an external USB DVD drive is suitable.
- If setup requires source media that is permanently unreadable, a product key alone cannot replace the missing installation files.
Should I use an FSX no-DVD patch?
No. A properly activated boxed FSX installation does not need a no-DVD executable, and Steam Edition never needs one. Modified executables can introduce malware, break service-pack compatibility and cause the same licence prompt to return after an update. Restore the official executable through repair or Steam file verification instead.
