How do I fix grainy textures and reflections in MSFS 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Fix grainy aircraft textures and reflections in MSFS 2024 by correcting render scale, anti-aliasing, sharpening, VRAM use and faulty liveries.

Grainy aircraft textures and reflections in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 usually result from low internal resolution, temporal upscaling, excessive sharpening, low reflection quality, VRAM pressure, or a faulty livery’s PBR maps. On PC, test TAA at 100 render scale with sharpening disabled, then compare a stock aircraft and default livery.

What causes grainy aircraft textures and reflections?

The pattern of the defect usually identifies its cause more reliably than changing every graphics option at once.

How to fix grainy aircraft surfaces in MSFS 2024

Use the following order so that each change tells you something useful.

  1. Create a controlled comparison. Park a default aircraft in clear daylight, select its factory livery and inspect it from an external camera. Take a normal screenshot; if the capture looks clean but the monitor does not, disable monitor sharpening, GPU filters and display enhancement modes.
  2. Restore native rendering. Set the display to its native resolution, Render Scaling to 100 and Anti-Aliasing to TAA. Temporarily disable DLSS, FSR or other upscaling. This is a diagnostic baseline, not necessarily the final performance setting.
  3. Remove excess sharpening. Disable in-simulator sharpening if that control is exposed, along with NVIDIA Image Scaling, Radeon Image Sharpening, overlay filters and monitor sharpness enhancements. Sharpening does not create missing detail; it exaggerates dither, mip transitions and reflection noise.
  4. Increase the relevant quality settings. Raise Reflections and Texture Resolution one step, then reload the flight. Use high anisotropic filtering for paintwork viewed at an angle. Our practical MSFS graphics baseline explains which settings can be reduced without sacrificing aircraft clarity.
  5. Check performance and VRAM. Temporal effects need several stable frames to resolve cleanly. If VRAM is full, lower Texture Resolution, terrain detail, shadow quality or another memory-heavy setting by one step rather than pushing textures higher. Frame generation may improve displayed frame rate, but it does not improve the base image supplied to the upscaler.
  6. Remove aircraft and livery add-ons. Temporarily empty or rename the Community folder on PC, then retest the default aircraft. Disable replacement textures and enhancement packages as well as the visible livery; a shared material modification can affect every paint scheme.
  7. Update and repair the affected content. Install the simulator, aircraft-package and graphics-driver updates available for the system. If one official aircraft remains affected, repair or reinstall that package through the simulator’s installed-content library. Clear the shader cache only after a driver problem or corrupted cache is suspected, because rebuilding it can cause temporary stutter.

If the grain is accompanied by crawling outlines or sparkling registration marks, follow our more targeted checks for jagged edges and shimmering liveries. On NVIDIA systems, also review the driver settings that should remain application-controlled; forced anti-aliasing and sharpening often make the image worse.

Which anti-aliasing setting gives the cleanest aircraft?

TAA at 100 render scale is the most useful troubleshooting baseline because it removes upscaling from the equation.

Once the aircraft looks correct, try DLAA if supported and performance allows, or DLSS Quality when extra performance is needed. Upscaling has fewer source pixels to reconstruct at 1080p, so metallic details, rivets and fine livery lines are more likely to crawl there than at higher output resolutions. Any temporal method can also show brief noise around moving propellers, wing edges and newly revealed reflections.

Why is only one aircraft or livery grainy?

A defect limited to one aircraft or livery almost always points to its material textures rather than the global graphics settings.

MSFS aircraft commonly use packed PBR material maps containing ambient-occlusion, roughness and metallic information. Incorrect channel values, missing mipmaps or poor compression can turn smooth paint into a speckled mirror. Older conversions may also contain unsuitable alpha or gloss data; our explanation of damaged alpha and reflectivity channels covers the tell-tale symptoms.

Keep the add-on removed if its default replacement fixes the problem. Global anti-aliasing changes cannot properly repair a malformed material map.

Can VRAM or streaming cause grainy textures?

VRAM pressure can force lower mip levels or unstable texture residency, while slow streaming usually causes delayed or blurry detail rather than persistent salt-and-pepper reflections.

If the aircraft starts sharp and degrades as a complex airport loads, watch dedicated GPU memory usage and reduce one memory-heavy setting. If it sharpens after waiting, content delivery may be involved. Clearing Rolling Cache is not a good first fix for a fuselage material because that cache primarily concerns streamed world content, not a broken livery’s PBR data.

How do I fix this on Xbox or PlayStation?

On Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro, first restart MSFS 2024 fully, confirm the simulator and aircraft content are updated, and compare a stock aircraft with its default livery.

Console editions expose fewer rendering controls, so remove optional liveries or enhancement packages and reinstall the affected aircraft content if possible. Select a quality-focused display mode when the simulator offers one. If every aircraft shows the same moving grain but screenshots are clean, check the television’s sharpness, noise reduction and motion-processing settings rather than reinstalling the simulator.
