Can you play MSFS 2020 and 2024 offline on Xbox Series X?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn what works offline in MSFS 2020 on Xbox Series X, why MSFS 2024 needs internet, and how to prepare your console before disconnecting.

You can play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 offline on Xbox Series X, but only after installing its offline world content and preparing the console and licence while connected. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 does not offer equivalent full offline play: it depends on internet authentication and cloud-streamed world data.

MSFS 2020 and 2024 offline support compared

The two versions handle an absent internet connection very differently.

VersionCan it launch offline? What you get
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020Yes, after preparation and with a valid offline licenceInstalled aircraft, activities and lower-detail offline scenery; no live or streamed services
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024No supported full offline modeLocally downloaded packages can reduce streaming, but authentication and core world services still need internet

Turning off Online Functionality inside the simulator is not the same as preparing the Xbox for disconnected use. That setting disables online services, but it does not install offline scenery or establish an offline game licence.

How do you prepare MSFS 2020 for offline play?

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 must be fully installed, licensed and opened online before you disconnect the Xbox Series X.

  1. Complete the installation and updates. Launch the simulator while connected and allow all required packages to finish. Our Xbox Series X installation checklist covers the initial setup and first-launch downloads.
  2. Install the Offline Mode add-on. Open the Xbox game-management screen for MSFS 2020 and check that the separate offline world or Offline Mode package is selected. It requires additional storage and is easily missed.
  3. Make this console your Home Xbox. A purchased digital copy normally needs the Series X designated as the account’s Home Xbox for its licence to work without an internet connection.
  4. Confirm ownership while online. Sign in with the account that owns the game and installed content, let profile data synchronise, then close the simulator fully. A physical copy requires its disc in the drive. A Game Pass installation is not a permanent offline licence; the subscription must remain active and can require periodic online validation.
  5. Put the console offline and test it. Use the Xbox network setting to go offline, then start MSFS 2020 afresh rather than resuming an old Quick Resume session. Test this before travelling or losing access to the connection.

What works in MSFS 2020 offline mode?

Offline mode retains the core flight simulator and content already installed locally, but it cannot reproduce the streamed world.

  • Installed aircraft, airports and compatible activities remain available.
  • Weather presets work, but live weather does not.
  • Offline world data replaces streamed Bing scenery and photogrammetry, so terrain and buildings can look less detailed or more generic.
  • Live traffic, multiplayer, Marketplace access and other connected services are unavailable.
  • Cloud saves cannot synchronise until the Xbox reconnects.
  • Streamed, uninstalled or online-dependent add-ons may be missing even if they appear in your library.

The common mistake is assuming the rolling cache contains everything needed. It only retains selected data from places already visited and is not a replacement for the dedicated offline world package.

Why won’t MSFS 2020 launch offline on Xbox Series X?

Most offline launch failures come from licensing, an incomplete update or a missing Offline Mode package.

  • Ownership error: confirm the correct account is signed in, the console is its Home Xbox, or the physical disc is inserted.
  • Game Pass validation: reconnect temporarily and verify that the subscription and entitlement remain active.
  • Checking-for-updates loop: reconnect and finish any pending simulator or content update, then launch once online before trying again.
  • Black screen or stale connection state: quit the game completely from the Xbox menu instead of using Quick Resume.
  • Missing or very basic scenery: return to Manage game and add-ons and confirm that the separate offline package is installed on usable storage.

Can downloaded MSFS 2024 content make it work offline?

No. Downloading selected Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 aircraft or scenery can reduce bandwidth use, but it does not install the complete world or remove the simulator’s online authentication and cloud dependencies.

Our explanation of what MSFS 2024 can store locally covers the distinction between downloaded packages and streamed content. The broader MSFS 2024 internet requirements explain which parts still depend on connectivity.

A brief connection loss during a flight is different from launching offline. Already loaded or cached data may remain visible temporarily, but missing scenery, service errors and failed restarts are possible. If reliable disconnected play is essential, a properly prepared MSFS 2020 installation is the suitable Xbox Series X option; MSFS 2024 requires a dependable internet connection.
