Fix Tobii eye tracking not working in MSFS 2024 by checking detection, calibration, camera settings, bindings and software conflicts.
Tobii eye tracking in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 usually stops working because the tracker is not detected before launch, cockpit head tracking is disabled, the centre or toggle command is mis-bound, or another camera tool is taking control. Verify Tobii outside the simulator, then enable one tracking method and re-centre it.
MSFS 2024 treats Tobii as a mixture of eye and head tracking. It does not normally display a gaze dot, so the absence of an on-screen pointer does not mean eye detection has failed. The expected result is controlled movement of the cockpit camera.
How do I tell whether Tobii or MSFS 2024 is at fault?
The built-in Tobii test separates a hardware or calibration failure from a simulator configuration problem.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Tobii software cannot detect your eyes | USB, driver, mounting or calibration problem | Fix detection outside MSFS before changing simulator settings |
| Tobii works in its test but not in MSFS | Launch order, disabled tracking or software conflict | Restart both applications and follow the checks below |
| Head movement works but eye movement is barely noticeable | Low eye contribution or expected camera behaviour | Raise the eye-tracking contribution gradually, if that control is available |
| The view jitters or snaps back | Two tracking providers or another bound camera input | Disable duplicate tracking and inspect camera bindings |
| Only one aircraft is affected | Aircraft-specific camera configuration | Test a default aircraft and update or disable the affected add-on |
How do I fix Tobii eye tracking in MSFS 2024?
Use this order so that you do not reinstall the simulator for a hardware or control-profile fault.
- Test the tracker outside MSFS. Close the simulator and open Tobii Experience. Confirm that the device is detected and that its calibration or gaze test follows both eyes. If it does not, reconnect the tracker directly to the PC rather than through a passive hub, check its mounting and restart Windows.
- Check the display and calibration. Select the monitor to which the tracker is physically attached, then recalibrate. Do this after moving the monitor, remounting the sensor, changing the main Windows display or switching users. Strong direct sunlight, reflections and an obstructed sensor can reduce eye detection even when head movement still works.
- Use a clean launch order. Exit MSFS 2024 and close camera or tracking utilities you do not need. Start Tobii Experience, wait until it recognises the tracker, and then launch the simulator. Connecting the tracker after MSFS has started may leave it unavailable until the next launch.
- Enable tracking and check its commands. In the simulator's camera and control settings, search for terms such as
head tracking, tracking, centreandtoggle. Enable head tracking, assign centre and toggle to known buttons, and remove accidental duplicate bindings from other controllers. Look straight ahead before pressing centre. - Test from the normal cockpit pilot camera. Fixed instrument views, showcase cameras, drone mode, replays and VR can ignore or replace Tobii movement. If the mouse or a controller also cannot move the view correctly, use our checks to trace cockpit panning and controller conflicts.
- Allow only one tracking route. Do not feed Tobii into native MSFS tracking while also exposing it through TrackIR emulation, OpenTrack, ChasePlane or another camera utility. Choose one programme to control the camera and disable the competing output.
- Test a default aircraft without camera add-ons. Temporarily disable third-party camera tools and test a stock aircraft in a simple free flight. If Tobii works there, restore add-ons individually until the conflict returns.
- Reset software only as a final step. Create a fresh MSFS control profile, install available simulator and Tobii software updates, and use your platform's file verification or repair function. Reinstall Tobii Experience if its own test fails; reinstalling the entire simulator is rarely justified when the tracker already works outside MSFS.
Why does Tobii work in menus but not in the cockpit?
MSFS 2024 only applies tracking movement in camera modes that accept head-position input. Return to the standard cockpit pilot view, toggle head tracking on and centre it while facing forwards.
A stored cockpit eyepoint can also make tracking appear offset or constrained. Pause tracking before moving the seat, then centre it again; our guide explains how to adjust the pilot eyepoint separately from head tracking. Do not compensate for a bad seat position by applying extreme Tobii offsets.
Why does Tobii jitter, drift or snap the camera back?
Jitter usually indicates competing camera inputs, while gradual drift more often points to calibration, seating position or excessive sensitivity.
- Rapid shaking: disable duplicate native, TrackIR-compatible and camera-tool inputs. Adding more smoothing only hides the conflict and introduces lag.
- View snapping to centre: inspect every connected controller for camera reset, cockpit look or view-axis bindings. A noisy analogue stick or held mouse input can continually override Tobii.
- Slow drift: recalibrate for the correct display, sit within the tracker's usable area and centre it from a natural flying posture.
- Movement that feels exaggerated: reduce head and eye sensitivity in small steps. Avoid setting a large dead zone until tracking is otherwise stable, because it can produce a sudden jump when movement crosses the threshold.
Can I use Tobii with ChasePlane, TrackIR or VR?
Use either MSFS's native Tobii input or an external camera system, not both at the same time.
- Native Tobii: choose this for the simplest setup. Disable TrackIR emulation and prevent external camera software from processing the same movement.
- ChasePlane or a TrackIR-compatible route: choose this when you need the external programme's camera profiles, then disable native Tobii camera control. We explain how to configure ChasePlane with one tracking source.
- VR: let the headset's positional tracking control the view and pause Tobii camera output. Eye-tracked rendering, where supported by a headset and runtime, is separate from using Tobii to move the cockpit camera.
Does Tobii eye tracking work on Xbox or PlayStation?
A USB Tobii Eye Tracker is a Windows PC peripheral for this purpose; MSFS 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro does not provide the same direct Tobii camera integration. Console players need to use the platform's supported camera controls or compatible VR hardware instead.
