A consumer simulator can move between the first two rows without changing software. Flying casually makes it a game; following a lesson plan makes it a practice tool. Neither use makes the equipment authority-qualified or the time loggable.
Formal devices are evaluated against defined standards. Yes, a home flight simulator is a useful informal training tool when each session has a specific objective and uses accurate procedures. It is particularly effective for tasks based on repetition and mental organisation:
- learning cockpit layouts, flows and checklist sequences;
- practising radio navigation, GPS operation and route planning;
- building an instrument scan and recognising developing deviations;
- rehearsing departures, arrivals, approaches and missed approaches;
- understanding autopilot modes and aircraft systems.
It cannot reproduce sustained acceleration, genuine risk, full peripheral vision, seat-of-the-pants cues or every control force. What goes wrong when a game is treated like an aircraft?
The main risk is negative training: repeatedly learning an action or response that is inaccurate in the real aircraft. Common causes include:
- poorly calibrated controls, excessive sensitivity or an unrealistic dead zone;
- using external views instead of learning the correct cockpit sight picture;
- memorising procedures from an inaccurate aircraft model;
- letting the autopilot conceal weak trimming, scanning or energy management;
- restarting after every mistake rather than identifying its cause;
- practising emergencies without understanding the approved procedure.

Does home simulator time count towards a pilot licence?
Ordinary PC or console simulator time does not count towards a pilot licence merely because realistic software, a yoke or a replica cockpit was used. Creditable time depends on the aviation authority, licence or rating, device qualification, approved exercise, supervision and recording requirements.
A device without motion may still receive credit for specified procedural or instrument tasks if it belongs to a recognised category. Conversely, an elaborate home cockpit may receive no credit at all. Anyone seeking loggable hours should confirm the exact device and course with the training provider before paying for or recording a session.
How should you use a flight simulator for training?
Use a home simulator as structured practice rather than assuming that realism alone produces learning.
- Set one objective. Practise a particular approach, checklist, navigation task or system instead of conducting an unfocused flight.
- Use reliable reference material. Match the procedure to the aircraft represented and check that the simulator models the relevant system accurately.
- Calibrate the controls. Correct axes, sensitivity, dead zones and trim before judging aircraft handling.
- Fly without shortcuts. Use cockpit views, normal checklists and realistic weather or failures appropriate to the exercise.
- Review the result. Examine track, altitude, speed and configuration errors, then repeat only after identifying what needs to change.
