What are flight simulator mods, and how do they work?

Flight simulator mods are third-party files that add to or alter a simulator’s aircraft, scenery, sounds, weather, traffic, missions, systems or interface. They work by placing compatible assets and configuration files where the simulator can discover and load them, either directly from an add-on folder or through a launcher, installer or symbolic link.

In flight simulation generally, a mod may be one small repaint or an aircraft containing a detailed flight model, cockpit systems and custom code. Most package-based mods leave the simulator’s original files untouched, but older add-ons and some installers write directly into simulator folders.

How do flight simulator mods work?

Most mods work because the simulator scans known locations, reads each package’s metadata and mounts or registers compatible content when it starts.

  1. The creator packages the content. A package can contain models, textures, sounds, configuration data, scripts or executable plugin code. Metadata identifies the content and, in some simulators, its dependencies.
  2. The user installs or activates it. This may mean extracting a folder, running an installer, registering scenery or enabling the package through a manager. The downloaded archive itself usually needs to be extracted first.
  3. The simulator discovers it. Modern simulators commonly scan designated add-on directories. Legacy platforms may depend on configuration files, scenery-library entries or files placed inside the simulator installation.
  4. Dependencies and priorities are resolved. A repaint points to its base aircraft, while scenery and plugins can depend on shared libraries. Load-order rules decide which asset wins when two packages alter the same location or resource.
  5. The content loads when required. An airport may load as the aircraft approaches, while an avionics plugin or traffic utility can remain active throughout the session.

Package-based systems can map an add-on into a virtual file structure without physically replacing the stock asset. A mod manager can do something similar with symbolic links, although the link stops working if its source folder is moved, renamed or disconnected.

Where do flight simulator mods go?

The correct mod location depends on the simulator, platform and package type; there is no universal flight simulator mods folder.

Are mods and add-ons the same thing?

In everyday flight-simulation use, mod and add-on often refer to the same third-party content, but the emphasis can differ.

  • Add-on is the broader term for anything added to the simulator, including aircraft, scenery, hardware software and officially distributed content.
  • Mod often implies community-created content or a modification to an existing aircraft, airport or simulator feature.
  • Official content or DLC is supplied through the simulator’s own distribution system and usually has a managed installation process.

The label does not determine quality, price or compatibility. A free aircraft can be more complex than a commercial repaint, while a tiny compatibility patch may be essential for another package to run.

Why is a flight simulator mod not working?

A mod usually fails because it is installed at the wrong folder level, requires missing content or was made for a different simulator version.

  • Nested folders: extracting an archive can create an extra directory above the actual package. In MSFS, for example, the package descriptor must be at the expected level rather than buried several folders down.
  • Wrong simulator or version: shared ancestry does not make an FSX package automatically compatible with Prepar3D, nor should every MSFS 2020 package be assumed to work unchanged in MSFS 2024.
  • Missing dependency: liveries need their named aircraft, while scenery can require separate libraries.
  • Duplicate or conflicting content: two airport packages for the same location can produce doubled buildings, broken terrain or incorrect runways.
  • Incorrect load order: scenery layers and replacement packages may be present but hidden by a higher-priority entry.
  • Outdated plugin code: executable plugins are more sensitive to simulator, operating-system and runtime changes than ordinary textures or models.

The fastest diagnosis is to disable all third-party content, confirm the unmodified simulator starts, and then restore packages in small batches. When the fault returns, halve that batch until the conflicting mod is identified. This is much faster than repeatedly reinstalling the simulator.

Can flight simulator mods damage the simulator?

Folder-based packages are normally reversible: remove or disable the package and the simulator returns to its stock content. Greater care is required with installers and legacy mods that overwrite core files, gauges or configuration entries.

Executable plugins and installers carry the same security considerations as other downloaded software. Use a trusted source, preserve dependency notes, avoid unnecessary core-file replacement and keep backups where an older mod explicitly requires manual edits.

Do mods reduce performance or affect multiplayer?

Yes, some mods can reduce performance, while multiplayer effects depend on which content every participant has installed.

  • Large textures increase graphics-memory use, but download size alone does not predict frame rate.
  • Detailed airports add objects, lights and draw calls near that location.
  • Complex aircraft systems and scripts can increase processor load throughout the flight.
  • AI traffic packages can tax both the processor and graphics card as the number of visible aircraft rises.
  • A simple livery usually has a much smaller effect than a detailed airport, aircraft or traffic package.

Most mods are local to the user’s simulator. Other players may see a substitute aircraft if they lack the matching model, and they will not automatically receive your custom airport or textures. Flight-model changes affect how your aircraft behaves locally, while the simulator or online service decides which position and state data are shared.

The practical rule is to match every mod to the exact simulator and required base content, keep packages isolated where possible, and activate new additions a few at a time. That makes updates, removal and conflict testing far easier.
