What free online ATC networks work with flight simulators?

The two main free online ATC networks for flight simulators are VATSIM and IVAO. Both use volunteer human controllers, require a free account and a compatible pilot client, and support common PC simulators. VATSIM usually offers the broadest activity; IVAO can be stronger in particular regions and organised events.

Which free online ATC network should I choose?

VATSIM is the usual first choice for broad traffic and controller availability, while IVAO is worth choosing when its local division, events or community are more active in the region where you fly.

Will VATSIM or IVAO work with my flight simulator?

VATSIM and IVAO work most easily with desktop versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane and Prepar3D, although the exact support depends on the network client and operating system.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator: PC editions of MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 can connect through an external pilot client. The simulator's built-in computer-controlled ATC is different from live network ATC; our guide to ATC in Microsoft Flight Simulator explains that distinction.
  • X-Plane: Supported desktop versions can use a dedicated network client. Check that its release supports your exact X-Plane version and operating system.
  • FSX and Prepar3D: VATSIM remains a practical option through compatible clients. IVAO support for older simulator versions can differ, so verify compatibility before building an installation around a legacy client.
  • FlightGear: FlightGear includes its own multiplayer and ATC facilities. Connecting it to a larger human ATC network is less straightforward and depends on compatible approved software; see our explanation of FlightGear's built-in and human ATC options.
  • Xbox and PlayStation: Console editions do not normally connect directly to VATSIM or IVAO because they cannot run the required external pilot client and model-injection software. This includes MSFS 2020 on Xbox and MSFS 2024 on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5.

Do not assume that network membership guarantees compatibility. Confirm that an approved client supports the exact combination of simulator, simulator version and operating system you use.

What do I need before connecting to live ATC?

You need an account, a supported pilot client, a working microphone and enough familiarity with your aircraft to follow routine controller instructions without stopping on a runway.

  1. Create an account and read the rules. Each network has its own callsign, conduct and connection requirements.
  2. Install the correct pilot client. VATSIM commonly uses different clients for Microsoft-based simulators and X-Plane, while IVAO provides its own client system. Obtain the client through the network's member area and confirm simulator compatibility.
  3. Configure voice and push-to-talk. Select the microphone and playback device inside the client rather than relying solely on the operating system defaults. A headset prevents controller audio from feeding back into the microphone.
  4. Install suitable model matching. This tells the client which aircraft model and livery to display for other pilots. It affects visuals, not your ability to speak with ATC.
  5. Start parked at a gate or stand. File the flight plan, use the same callsign in the client and connect away from runways and taxiways.
  6. Check controller coverage. Tune the published frequency when ATC is online. If nobody is controlling the area, follow that network's advisory-frequency and position-reporting procedures.

Why am I connected but cannot see or hear ATC?

A successful network connection does not mean a controller is online, and most apparent ATC faults come from volunteer coverage, audio selection or model-matching configuration.

  • No controller appears: ATC staffing is voluntary and is not continuous. Check the network's live coverage before departure or fly using its uncontrolled-airspace procedures.
  • You can hear but cannot transmit: Recheck the push-to-talk assignment, microphone permission and input device selected inside the pilot client.
  • Controllers cannot hear you clearly: Avoid speakers, disable unwanted laptop microphones and confirm that the correct headset microphone is active.
  • Other pilots are invisible or generic: The network connection may be fine. Repair the model-matching package, confirm its path and review the client's matching rules.
  • Your connection is rejected: Check the account credentials, callsign format, client version and whether another session is already connected under the same account.
  • The simulator stutters near busy airports: Large numbers of injected aircraft and complex matching models can reduce performance. Lower the client's aircraft display range or use less demanding models.
