A file described as a repaint or livery contains textures, not the whole aircraft. A base package normally supplies the external model and configuration files, but it does not necessarily include a detailed virtual cockpit. AI traffic models may have no usable cockpit at all.
How do I install a downloaded Boeing 747?
The correct installation method depends on the simulator and the way the archive was packaged.
- Verify the simulator. Check the description for the exact platform and, where stated, the supported simulator generation. Similar-looking FS2004, FSX, P3D, X-Plane and MSFS files are not interchangeable.
- Extract the archive first. Do not run the aircraft directly from the ZIP file. Open the extracted folder and read any included installation notes.
- Identify the package type. If it is a repaint, install the required base aircraft before adding the texture. If it is an AI model, do not expect normal cockpit systems.
- Place it in the correct add-on location. FSX and Prepar3D aircraft commonly belong under
SimObjects\Airplanes; FS2004 aircraft normally use itsAircraftfolder; X-Plane aircraft belong underAircraft. PC editions of modern MSFS use their designated Community or add-on package location. - Copy supporting files only as instructed. Older packages may include separate gauges, effects or sound files. Preserve their folder structure rather than dropping every file into the aircraft directory.
- Restart the simulator. Search under Boeing, the package author or the operator named in the aircraft configuration, and clear any aircraft-selection filters.
Why does the Boeing 747 not appear in the simulator?
A missing aircraft is usually caused by the wrong package type, an extra nested folder or an absent dependency.
- Folder nested one level too deep: in FSX and Prepar3D, the simulator must be able to reach files such as
aircraft.cfginside the aircraft's main folder. Move the actual aircraft folder, not the outer download wrapper. - Base model missing: a livery cannot appear without the exact 747 model named in its description. A 747-400 texture will not automatically fit a different 747 variant.
- Wrong simulator: modern MSFS packages use a different structure from FSX aircraft, while X-Plane expects its own aircraft format. Renaming folders does not create compatibility.
- No virtual cockpit: the download may be an AI model, external model or repaint rather than a complete flyable aircraft.
- Blank or broken instruments: legacy gauges may be incompatible with a newer 64-bit simulator. Repeatedly copying the same gauge files will not fix an unsupported module.
- Aircraft filters: disable favourites-only, role or livery filters and search by manufacturer as well as the airline name.
Can I install these free 747 downloads on Xbox or PlayStation?
No—PC freeware archives cannot be manually copied into the console editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 accept only add-ons made available through their supported in-simulator content system; the downloadable FSX, P3D, FS2004 and X-Plane packages above are for computers.
