A white sky with black ground in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition usually means the renderer has failed to load or apply environment textures. The common causes are DirectX 10 Preview, a damaged shader or configuration cache, missing scenery files, graphics-driver overrides, or pressure on FSX's limited 32-bit address space.
What should I try first?
Turn off DirectX 10 Preview and restart FSX before changing or reinstalling anything else.
- Run a controlled test. Load a stock aircraft in daylight at an airport outside any recently installed scenery. Select a clear-weather theme. If this flight renders correctly, the fault is probably tied to an add-on or scenery area rather than FSX itself.
- Disable DirectX 10 Preview. Open FSX's display settings, clear the
Preview DirectX 10option if it is present, close the simulator and start it again. Many older aircraft, scenery packages and texture replacements were designed for the standard DirectX 9 renderer. Close FSX, then rename the active
fsx.cfgfile tofsx.cfg.old. It is normally under%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSXor%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FSX-SE. Steam Edition may use either folder depending on the installation history, so check the modification date. Under the equivalent%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoftfolder, rename the relevantShadersorShaders10cache if present. FSX rebuilds these items when launched. - Reset graphics-driver overrides. Return the FSX driver profile to application-controlled settings. If the problem began directly after a driver change, reinstall that driver or return to the previously working version.
Keep the renamed configuration file until the fault is solved. A fresh fsx.cfg removes custom display settings and may omit entries required by some add-ons, so compare it with the backup rather than discarding the old file.
How can I identify the actual cause?
The location and timing of the fault usually reveal whether it comes from the renderer, scenery or resource pressure.

A plain white sky by itself can simply be dense cloud or overcast weather. Black terrain combined with it is not normal weather behaviour.
How do I fix black ground in one scenery area?
Black ground confined to one airport or region points to that scenery package, its dependencies or its position in the Scenery Library.
- Disable the newest scenery area in the Scenery Library, restart FSX and revisit the same coordinates.
- Check the package structure. Confirm that the complete scenery was installed into the intended folder and that its scenery area is active. Do not combine an update with files from a different base release.
- Test overlapping scenery separately. Disable competing airport, terrain, landclass and photo scenery one at a time. Changing several layers together hides which package is responsible.
- Reinstall from a complete archive if disabling and re-enabling the area does not help. For image-based terrain, follow the correct FSX photoreal scenery installation and activation process.
If default terrain is black worldwide, do not start replacing individual sky or ground textures from unrelated packages. That often leaves a mixture of stock and modified files and makes the fault harder to isolate.
Why does it happen only after flying for a while?
Visual corruption that develops during a long flight usually means FSX is running short of address space or graphics resources.
FSX is a 32-bit application. Dense airports, high-resolution ground textures, complex aircraft, heavy autogen and large amounts of AI traffic can consume its available resources until terrain or sky textures stop loading correctly. A crash or out-of-memory error may follow, but texture corruption can appear first.
Reduce autogen and scenery complexity, lower unusually large texture settings, remove overlapping high-resolution scenery and cut AI traffic. Restart FSX before repeating the same route; if the corruption appears later or disappears, resource pressure is the leading suspect. When should I repair or reinstall FSX?
Repair FSX only after the fault still appears with a stock aircraft, stock scenery, DirectX 10 Preview disabled and freshly generated configuration and shader files.
For FSX: Steam Edition, use Steam's file-integrity verification function. For boxed FSX, use the repair option provided by the installation media; installations with expansion or service-pack components may require those components to be repaired as well. Back up modified default files first because a repair can restore the original versions.
A complete reinstall is the last resort. It is justified when core files remain damaged after repair, but it will not cure an incompatible add-on if the same package is installed again unchanged.
