Fix FSX slow loading and post-load bugs by isolating scenery, aircraft, gauges, configuration faults, CPU overload and 32-bit memory pressure.
FSX usually loads slowly and misbehaves afterwards because it is scanning too much add-on scenery, waiting for an unavailable scenery path, loading a complex default flight, or exhausting its 32-bit memory space. Faulty gauges, startup modules, an overworked main CPU thread, and a damaged configuration can produce the same combination.
This applies to both boxed FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. The useful clue is exactly when the delay or bad behaviour begins; slow startup, slow flight loading and poor performance inside the cockpit have overlapping but different causes.
Where does FSX slow down or become unstable?

How do I find what is making FSX slow and buggy?
The fastest method is to establish a clean baseline and add complexity back in controlled groups.
- Load a basic test flight. Select a default FSX aircraft, a modest default airport, fair weather and daytime. Set AI traffic to zero for this test. If the problem disappears, the core simulator is probably sound and the fault lies in the original aircraft, scenery, weather or traffic load.
- Separate startup delay from flight-loading delay. If FSX is slow before reaching the opening screen, concentrate on startup modules, the default flight and scenery-library paths. Our checklist for FSX startup delays covers those causes without mixing them up with in-flight frame-rate problems.
- Check the Scenery Library. Remove or correct entries pointing to disconnected drives, renamed folders or unavailable network locations. Disable third-party scenery in batches, restart FSX and repeat the same test flight. Do not edit
scenery.cfgblindly when the Scenery Library can make the change safely. - Test the aircraft separately. If a default aircraft works but an add-on does not, suspect its panel, gauges, sound package or high-resolution textures. Use the add-on's own manager or uninstaller where available; do not delete random DLL files from the FSX installation.
- Reduce the settings that hit FSX hardest. AI traffic, road and boat traffic, autogen, scenery complexity, detailed weather and water effects can make the simulator appear broken when its main thread is simply overloaded. - Rebuild the active configuration. Back up and rename the active
FSX.cfg, then launch FSX so it creates a clean one. You will need to restore graphics preferences and check controller assignments. Steam Edition may use an FSX or FSX-SE configuration location depending on whether boxed FSX has also been installed, so confirm which file was modified most recently instead of guessing. - Repair core files last. Steam users can verify installed files after backing up any modified stock content. For boxed FSX, use its repair facility where available. Reinstallation is rarely the best first step because it does not necessarily remove a bad configuration or add-on entry.
Change one group at a time and repeat the identical flight. A mistake we see constantly is changing scenery, aircraft, traffic and graphics settings together; that may hide the symptom, but it never identifies the cause.
Why does FSX get worse the longer it runs?
Progressive texture loss, long pauses and eventual instability usually point to resource pressure rather than ordinary low FPS.
FSX is a 32-bit application, so its virtual address space remains limited even on a computer with abundant physical RAM. Detailed airports, complex aircraft, large texture sets and demanding weather can fill that space during a flight. More installed RAM does not remove the per-process limit.

Is one slow load after installing scenery normal?
One unusually long load can be normal after changing the Scenery Library because FSX may rebuild its scenery database and indexes.
Repeated rebuilding on every launch is not normal. It suggests that an entry cannot be reached, a scenery package keeps rewriting the library, or FSX cannot retain its configuration. Check folder availability and permissions before reinstalling the simulator.
What if default aircraft and scenery are still buggy?
If a clean default flight still crashes, freezes or displays broken gauges, the likely causes narrow to the active configuration, startup modules, damaged core files, drivers or system-level interference.
Back up DLL.XML and EXE.XML before disabling third-party startup entries, and restore them one group at a time.
