How does helicopter trim work in MSFS 2024, and why might it not work?
Learn how helicopter trim works in MSFS 2024 and fix wrong bindings, force-trim confusion, duplicate axes, assistance conflicts and trim resets.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, helicopter trim shifts the cyclic’s neutral reference or force datum so you can maintain an attitude without continuous stick pressure. It does not automatically hold a hover. If it appears ineffective, the usual causes are aeroplane trim bindings, a held trim-reset command, duplicate axes, assistance settings or an aircraft-specific system.
What does helicopter trim do in MSFS 2024?
Helicopter trim reduces the sustained cyclic input needed for a particular attitude or speed. In forward flight, for example, you can apply forward cyclic, add trim in that direction and then gradually relax pressure on a spring-centred joystick while the simulator retains the required bias.

What is the difference between rotor trim and force trim?
Rotor trim buttons, force-trim release and stability systems can all reduce workload, but they are not interchangeable.

A normal non-force-feedback joystick cannot physically move its spring centre. MSFS 2024 therefore represents trim as an internal offset; the fact that the desktop stick itself has not moved does not mean trim has failed.
How do I set up and use helicopter trim?
Use the helicopter-specific rotor-trim controls rather than the elevator and aileron trim commands intended for aeroplanes.
- Select the correct profile. Confirm that the active control profile belongs to the helicopter and controller you are using. Profiles can differ between aircraft, so a binding that worked in one helicopter may be absent in another.
- Bind rotor trim. Search the control assignments for rotor or helicopter trim and assign fore-and-aft increase, decrease and reset functions. Add lateral trim commands if the aircraft supports them. - Remove unwanted trim axes. Leave analogue rotor-trim axes unassigned unless you have hardware dedicated to them. A centred lever or dial can continuously transmit zero and overwrite every button adjustment.
- Check assistance and aircraft systems. Temporarily disable cyclic assistance while testing. If trim is implemented through the helicopter’s force-trim, SAS or AFCS system, make sure the required electrical power and cockpit switches are on.
- Test in steady forward flight. Hold a small cyclic input, tap trim in that direction and ease the stick towards centre gradually. Test fore-and-aft and lateral trim separately before trying to trim during a hover.
For a conventional force-trim system, hold the force-trim release, establish the desired cyclic position and release the button to set the new reference. The exact recentring behaviour varies by aircraft implementation, so watch the virtual cyclic or control-input indicator and do not snap a spring-loaded joystick back to centre.
Why is helicopter trim not working in MSFS 2024?
Most helicopter trim failures come from control assignments or competing inputs rather than the flight model itself.
- Wrong command family: elevator, aileron and rudder trim are fixed-wing commands. Bind rotor or helicopter trim instead.
- Reset mistaken for release: rotor-trim reset clears the trim bias; it is not necessarily the same command as force-trim release. A maintained switch assigned to reset may clear trim continuously.
- Analogue axis overwrite: a trim wheel, slider or unused controller axis can keep sending its centred value after every button press.
- Duplicate assignments: inspect every connected joystick, throttle, pedal set, controller and keyboard profile. Two devices commanding opposite trim inputs can make the result look random.
- Assisted cyclic: helicopter assistance can counter or hide small manual trim changes. Turn it off for one diagnostic flight, then decide whether to restore it.
- Aircraft limitation: not every helicopter provides lateral trim, native force trim or the same level of system modelling. A generic binding may have no effect if that aircraft does not consume the command.
- Automation conflict: SAS or autopilot modes may mask a trim change or command the cyclic according to another target. Test manual trim with automation disengaged only when that is normal and safe for the aircraft.
- Trim at its limit: reset trim, stabilise the helicopter and apply it again in small steps. Trim cannot compensate for a grossly incorrect collective setting or an out-of-control aircraft.

How can I tell whether MSFS received the trim input?
A command that never registers points to the active profile or hardware binding; a command that registers and then reverses points to an overwrite.
Open the control assignments for the active device and verify that the intended button is detected. In the aircraft, apply several trim steps while watching any available cyclic-position display, trim indicator or control overlay. If the command registers but produces no aircraft response, check that helicopter’s cockpit trim, SAS or AFCS implementation.
Can helicopter trim hold a hover?
